David Ward 9,208
QUESTION 1: Do you like Gaga's nasally, robotic voice? I am so in love with her lower registry voice and when she gets dirty and nasally almost to the point she's robotic, I just can't handle myself. I am an ultimate fan of David Bowie and hearing vocals like this really gives me chills and fills this void I've needed from authentic recording artists lately. QUESTION 2: Was she insecure about her nasally voice in the past? I remember she was not happy with one of the of final mixes of 'The Greatest Thing' with Cher and she was upset her voice sounded 'robotic'. I'm not saying she was insecure about it at all. It may just not what she wanted the direction to go to. I remember when she discussed about Chromatica, she asked herself and other featuring artists to step out of their comfort zone. I also feel her robotic vocals are more prevalent in this album. DISCLAIMER: I am really stoned right now lol. Please do not drag me or say that I'm reaching (I'm aware that I might be). And if you disagree with me, please don't be mean or be completely dismissive to my thought , it's been a hard week for me. But I am open to hear your thoughts and what you guys might think! Let's keep this a healthy and safe discussion Provide some examples of said voice below if you want...
derpmonster 22,412
Yes! It's really good and it's one of the many tones she's capable of. A lot of singers do it for resonance and to easily transition registers. Her Just Another Day NRJ performance comes to mind. So does Smile. It's a choice in singing technique and is often called "mask placement." And the good thing is she doesn't always have to do that to sound good. She can sing and belt strongly without nasality in songs like Gypsy and Dope. There's also the album version of MR which is less nasal than most live versions. One thing to note though is robotic isn't always the result of nasality. It can be artificial a la autotune. Maybe that was the thing on the Cher song. She definitely chose not to do the nasal sound in her album recordings earlier in her career but has since changed that. I don't think she was embarrassed, I just think it wasn't the pop sound her producers wanted. Check out iTunes data & graphs at CHARTPOP.live
dynamite 55,253
I don't know if it's nasal but at the beginning of 1000 Doves it sounds like she's singing with her mouth closed or the microphone against her mouth or something. What's that? Like a poem said by a neydy in red

What's that? Yeah it's the nasality combined with an open throat with a depressed/lowered larynx that produces that sound. She used lowered larynx sounds a lot on this album especially on the song Enigma. Classical Italian singing technique has a concept called chiaroscuro which means "light-dark". The light (or more accurately, bright) sound is what the nasality/mask placement produces and the dark sound (like in the song Enigma) is what the lowered larynx produces. I guess she just approaches ballads in a more classical way now. Check out iTunes data & graphs at CHARTPOP.live
hELXIG 42,714
The stoned paranoid it's okay, we aren't judging you. I love that nasally robotic tone! Her vocals in this album are so dynamic, from growls to belts to nasal autotune to head voice, it's got it all! I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.
