Big studies dim hopes for hydroxychloroquine

Through the fog of alleged misconduct, hope, hype, and politicization that surrounds hydroxychloroquine, the malaria drug touted as a COVID-19 treatment, a scientific picture is now emerging.

Praised by presidents as a potential miracle cure and dismissed by others as a deadly distraction, hydroxychloroquine was spared a seeming death blow last week. On 4 June, after critics challenged the data, The Lancet suddenly retracted a paper that had suggested the drug increased the death rate in COVID-19 patients (see p. 1167), a finding that had stopped many clinical trials in their tracks. But now three large studies, two in people exposed to the virus and at risk of infection and the other in severely ill patients, show no benefit from the drug. Coming on top of earlier smaller trials with disappointing findings, the new results mean it's time to move on, some scientists say, and end most of the trials still in progress.

“It just seems like we are ignoring signal after signal,” says Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute. U.S. President Donald Trump's promotion of it led to a scientific “obsession” with hydroxychloroquine despite thin evidence for its promise, he says. “We'd be better off shifting our attention to drugs that might actually work.” Peter Kremsner of the University of Tübingen agrees hydroxychloroquine “certainly isn't a wonder drug.” The new results left him “wrestling” with the question of whether to proceed with two hydroxychloroquine trials, one in hospitals and the other in patients with milder illness at home

'Gold Standard' Clinical Trial Finds Hydroxychloroquine Won't Prevent COVID-19

WEDNESDAY, June 3, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Hydroxychloroquine, the malaria drug touted and reportedly used by President Donald Trump as a preventative for COVID-19, appears not to have lived up to its hype, a new study shows.

Unlike some prior studies, this new trial was a "gold standard" prospective, randomized clinical trial. It found that hydroxychloroquine could not prevent COVID-19 any better than a sugar pill.

Worse, 40% of those taking hydroxychloroquine developed side effects including nausea, upset stomach or diarrhea. Fortunately, no serious side effects or heart problems occurred in the study, the researchers noted. An uptick in risk for potentially dangerous heart rhythm abnormalities had been noted in prior studies in which COVID-19 patients received hydroxychloroquine as a treatment.

Hydroxychloroquine trial discontinued in South Dakota

Sanford Health announced last Friday that the statewide hydroxychloroquine trial has been discontinued after new research found the drug was not helping prevent COVID-19.

The study was a collaboration among Sanford Health, Avera Health and Monument Health, and was sponsored by the State of South Dakota

According to a Sanford Health release, results of research by the University of Minnesota stated that the university “found no benefit of hydroxychloroquine over a placebo as a post-exposure preventative therapy.”

Hydroxychloroquine May Worsen Odds for Cancer Patients With COVID-19

THURSDAY, May 28, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- As the evidence piles up that a malaria drug touted as a possible coronavirus treatment by President Donald Trump may instead harm patients, a new study shows the same might hold true for cancer patients with COVID-19.

Researchers found that cancer patients with COVID-19 who receive both hydroxychloroquine and the antibiotic azithromycin have a higher risk of death than those who aren't given the two drugs.

Study Shows Hydroxychloroquine’s Harmful Effects on Heart Rhythm

The malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, which has been promoted as a potential treatment for Covid-19, is known to have potentially serious effects on heart rhythms. Now, a team of researchers has used an optical mapping system to observe exactly how the drug creates serious disturbances in the electrical signals that govern heartbeat.

It's like every morning, Trump wakes up and says "What can I fluck up today"

‘I’m struggling to get hydroxychloroquine for my medical condition after Donald Trump claimed it could cure Covid-19’

Eva is one of the many sufferers of the devastating condition scleroderma who has noticed a shortage in supplies of hydroxychloroquine

Taking it daily meant she could dramatically reduce the constant chest infections and viral illnesses she suffered from as a result of her scleroderma, enabling her to live a relatively normal life.

But ever since US president Donald Trump cited the drug as a potential treatment for Coronavirus, Eva, and many other scleroderma sufferers worldwide, have struggled to get hold of it and now fear it could run out.

Neither do shortages - You're full of a lot of things, except compassion

This Is How the Hydroxychloroquine Shortage Is Hurting People with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Trump’s advice to use the antiviral drug to prevent COVID-19 was baseless and dangerous — and is putting the lives of people with chronic conditions at risk.

I called every single pharmacy in our area and was met with the same story each time.

In the weeks spent waiting for hydroxychloroquine to become available, I experienced the worst flare in my 6 years of being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.

Dressing, cooking, walking up and down stairs, cleaning, and caring for my children and mother became insurmountable tasks.

I have no idea what ur talking about.

I'm talking about research for the virus, i'm not saying to stop the fabrication of chloroquine for those who need it for x reasons other than coronavirus that clearly does not work

Originally you told me "Yeah move on, focus on something else". I focus on Hydroxychloroquine because many in the world were misled by Trump. Many still believe Hydroxychloroquine is the answer to COVID (at least one on this board believes) which is causing shortages for those that need the medication. Simple as that. I focus and what I think is important, maybe not for me but for others.

scientists didn't post it, I did. Where would we be without scientists investigating this and that?

How about this, you focus on what you like and I'll focus on what I like. Since you already know everything about Hydroxychloroquine why would you waste your time?
