Good intention, but bad move.

Times have changed. A LOT. I love and appreciate PC culture for the social justice and awareness it’s shown. But this has gone way too far.

Tbh I'm conflicted about all this situation. But no one can deny this is a racist movie. More than that, it mentions confederate generals as heroes. 

Its important to note that the movie was pulled out because HBO was called out to do so and it seems that it will be again available after they will make a documentary that explains its problems.

okay but GWTW is not Birth of a Nation. and HBO having it on their streaming service does not equate to publishing Mein Kampf or whatever, and I don't really think we have to explain why

this movie has a crucial place in the film history, was a watershed moment for black actors, and is a monument to the skewered ways history is portrayed in hollywood. the depiction of slavery and the racism in the film are very insidious and extremely problematic, but burying it under the rug pretending like it never happened does a disservice to society, not only culturally, but also because it erases how tone deaf hollywood used to be (and still is).

of course a movie from 1939 is not going to be sensible to these issues, like why are people surprised? the other day I watched a Get Hard with Will Ferrel and Kevin Heart that was from begging to end a joke about black people going to prison, it was so hardcore I cannot believe they actually greenlit this movie. why aren't people talking about that movie that was made like 5 years ago instead of directing all this anger and shock at a movie that is 80 years old?

having conversations about film (and art in general) for better or for worse is great, and I fully support including a disclaimer, but nobody is going to watch a movie about slaves from 1939 for its historical accuracy, and pulling it from circulation won't stop ignorant and racist people from twisting it to their own values either.

I personally think films and tv shows from the past should not be banned because of their offensive contents. they are clearly products of their times -- and should be viewed as a reminder of how much progress we have come so far,  and how much more we have to achieve. I wont watch this anymore because it's a good movie. But I will watch this to serve as a reminder that slavery existed and Hollywood tried to paint it as happy circumstance. just my take.
