HBO Max removes "Gone with the wind" from its platform

Stupid move. Brings aware to the issue more than anything. I understand taking down celebratory monuments but leave ART alone. Hattie McDaniel became the first African American woman to win an Oscar with this, but I guess they wanna ignore that too! And considering this way before the Civil Rights Movement, this was huge.

Well, if there is an equivalent of a Confederate statue in movies, this will be the movie who does that. 

It's an ode to the Great South and presents all slaves being happy with their condition.

I'm conflicted about this one. On one hand it does glorify slavery, but on the other hand it is an excellent film and probably one of the greatest of all time.

Very mixed on this. On one hand it represents slavery in an awful way, making it seem positive. On the other, as a film graduate it's one of the best sweeping epics every made in terms of technical achievement. It suffers the same fate as song of the south, while not explicitly racist in terms of racial hatred, it's insensitive to the true realities of slavery at the time, depicting slaves as happy helpers rather than the actual reality.

Celebrating slaver traders by putting their statue on a pedestal is different to a film that portrays the Great South.

I'm quite conflicted on this regardless tbh. Still feel it should be left alone. There will come a point where this all becomes too much...

She was vilified years later for this role, which is stupid. She took the opportunities she had at that moment, which were very limited.

 Calm down. They didn’t permanently remove it. They’re filming racial commentary to go along with it and it will come back once that’s ready. This is a brilliant move as kids who will discover this movie in the future will know the real truth, not a fairytale painted by racists.

I understand that "Gone with the Wind" is a misrepresentation of what went down in the South and it even depicts marital rape as something that's okay. But it's the highest grossing movie ever (when adjusted for inflation) and shows views from that time period. But I think pulling the film altogether is a misstep. HBO Max is a streaming service and as thus requires watchers to select the film. It's not something that's scheduled to be broadcast and it doesn't even need to be advertised on the platform. A greater opportunity for HBO would have been to push a screen onto viewers when selecting the film that requires them to acknowledge the film is not factual and to give them resources to factual information regarding slavery. Because it is a streaming platform and not a broadcast, viewers are able to select these things without a time restraint and a "more info" button could have prompted a screen with writing or even an educational video. This was such a easy way out.

 

EDIT: I didn't read the article because WSJ required money but upon researching some more I found that what I described is actually what they're doing.
