The movie is being removed temporarily to add the context.

Same goes for the movies Hitlers propaganda produced. They really are technically innovative, great material for students and scientist or education. The problem here is that its broadcasted through an entertainment perspective not an education perspective. How would you feel about Nazi proaganda being available on HBO just because its a good movie?

Point well taken but that's a bit more extreme, it's a bad reflection of the time that is horribly insensitive and racist, but it's not propaganda intended to control a population and sway a vote.

Now that's exactly what I feared was going to happen... This is an insult to people's intelligence. I'm literally speechless. You don't educate people through censorship, that's how fascist societies work. This is going too far.

I'm literally named after Scarlett and everyone defending GWTW is cucked by the goddamn Daughters of the Confederacy. I don't know what's worse Southerners who love GWTW because Mitchell perpetuates myths about the South or Northerners who are completely deluded about the South's relationship to this film.

Historically, audiences and critics in the North and South did not approach GWTW with a critical perspective and a lot of people still watch GWTW in total support of the South and slavery, or worse the slavery is a total afterthought to Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh.

My family still watches it in support of the confederacy and slavery. Many people I know do. It is far from a few people. It is a big problem in the south that no one wants to talk about. People say things in private about the movie and slavery that they will never admit publicly. White southerners miss slavery. That lust for power has never left.

My grandmother's father owned slaves and he loved the movie. He would tell people in my family that the only thing wrong with it was they didn't treat [racial slurs] rough enough for his liking. I have heard that same story my entire life. Everyone I grew up with loved it. They viewed it as a perfect America. Having a former slave owner love it says all anyone needs to know about the movie.

Yes, until they add historical context to it. Read more than the title.

Now that's more like it. But Gone With the Wind isn't nearly as problematic as Griffith's Birth of a Nation - if only for educational purposes, those films still need to be seen.

Would you be down for HBO streaming a Nazi propoganda film in which Jews are depicted in heinous ways and are shown as subservient/inferior to Germans? Would you support a major streaming service making that kind of material readily available to the hundreds of millions of people who visit their site?

Germany would never argue over whether Nazi films are "historically significant art" or whatever bullshit ppl wanna say about GWTW. Only America refuses to hold itself accountable for the atrocities it committed against minority groups, and that's the reason that we can continue to humor the argument that a film like G.W.T.W is suitable entertainment for contemporary audiences.

It's one thing for this kind of art to be available for those interested in history to study. It's another for a corporate giant like HBO to promote such films to mainstream audiences.

Yes, GWTW is a historical film. It's not an anti-black film or a propaganda film against the black people.

And we are talking about the streaming channel of HBO. Someone is watching the film by choice. It's not that it is on the television.

Also, it's HBO not Disney or Nickelodeon.

Both are problematic in their own ways. Do they really need to be seen? There are other movies to discuss the time period that would be better suited. There is still far too much sympathy for both movies and their subject matter for them to be used for education purposes. If they must be viewed, there does need to be context and conversation added to it. I live in an area where far too many people support the confederacy and want "the south to rise again" because of Gone With The Wind. I do not have opinions on Birth Of A Nation. I do not know what that is. I will research it.

Prpaganda is a wider definition than what youre saying here. Im just using the reference to illustrate my point.

Southerners are taught a completely different history of the civil war

My parents told me the south did not lose the war. They taught me that the south kindly chose to give up slaves to stabilize the economy because the north ruined it by starting the war. Many people I know believe this. When I learned this was not true it was mind blowing. A lot of the things I was taught about the civil war was wrong. In school we were taught that black people came to America as indentured servants, not slaves. Several of my teachers said black people lied about the harshness slavery for sympathy. Yes, we are taught a completely different history.

Birth of a Nation is an absolutely vile film from 1915 that I saw at university where I studied the history of racism in cinema. If you think GWTW is problematic, brace yourself. You being from the South, I understand you're surrounded by people who have a very biased view of these films and issues and basically see what they want to see, but I don't think any intelligent human being today in any modern and progressive society could possibly take those films as literally as when they were made. Both in their subject matter and their technique, both those films are part of American history and should never be put under the rug. Seeing how those issues were tackled in entertainment is essential if you want to understand the evolution of racism in America in the last 100 years.
