She would call the actual police and wait? It means that the social worker who will respond to mental health calls will have to be trained just like regular officers. So it wont be called the police, but it will be the police. It is stupid. It will probably cost more and be less effective than reforming, retraining / training better the police. It will be better because you do NOT need weapons and you can be trained in specialized skills with handling mental health crises and de-escalation. Police don't know how to do that. I've seen people in way worse shape than me that had total meltdowns and the health professionals were trained to deal with it Of course from time to time a severe case that may require a cop may arise but in such rare cases they can always be called But proper reforming is a possible solution. It's just that I question how much it will really do cuz law enforcement seems to attract a certain personality of people. So the fewer responsibilities they have the better in my opinion There's things u can't replace officers in but to whatever extent possible I don't see why not. Cuz I think there will always be limits to what reforms can do because of the nature of people that wanna be police officers. I'm not saying all but a lot of them are agressive and jackasses by nature I understand the point, but we are talking about US. The guns are easily available. U are responding to a mental health call and suddenly u discover that someone has a gun. What will u do? U watch, while u wait for the actual police? I understand that these kind of programs can work, but I dont know it they are the solutions for emergencies.

It depends on the nature of the call for help. They can always come up with mechanisms like alerting the police so they're aware of a possible need and can arrive quickly if needed. There are police officers out there who admit they have too much on their hands. Everyone is hurt in that case. The mental health professional talks them out of doing whatever they're thinking of. It's their job. It's not like a police threat could stop someone willing who has a gun. Check out iTunes data & graphs at CHARTPOP.live

T3ARS 4,132
Glad to see the idea in the mainstream. Definitely won't happen anytime soon as creating a safer and better society won't happen over night but seeing some support for the idea is great to see. It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences. - Audre Lorde

Someone calls 911 and a social worker comes to them? I guess it's an idea that can be discussed, but it will be hard to implement and it will have a limited reach. I don't have relevant info on me but the US does something already that needs to be changed: The Suicide Prevention Helpline. It's more specialized lines for specialized needs. Except this time they could send people from the community if needed. 911 could ask you your emergency and ask if you think they'd prefer a social worker. Then redirect you to their phone. Well, if it can work then it is good to be discussed and promoted as part of the solution. And the democrats need to fix their message and be clear to the public on what they propose. Adakam 2
The main problem here is the slogan, "defund" is only confusing people and putting the attention on the wrong thing. Even of the video in Minneapolis where the woman asked the mayor in front of everyone, she said something like "do you commit to defunding the PD, because we dont want more police with guns, etc", And the mayor answered with "im against abolishing the PD" and everyone went nuts. Call it "re-budget", or make the slogan "Stop police overspending", but defund is just sending mixed signals everywhere, and look at this poll, the public's trust in the police is all over the place. TheAlexer 1,343
Didn't know there were conservatives here on Gagadaily Defund the pigs, throw them all out. Hold them all accountable for their fascist actions during the protests. Give the money to the important sectors like healthcare and social programs and then build new smaller police departments without these white supremacists, billion dollar spendings, immunity and military style weapons
Bjaf 1,336
Some people are acting like Democrats came up with this concept. This is something that Black theorists have been talking about for a long time. It doesn’t need a “rebranding” because that’s exactly what they’re asking for: defunding the police. Yes, what that means is “take funds from the police and invest in community-based solutions + other institutions in need of funding”. But the reality is, regardless of the term used, most people aren’t willing to do the work of finding out what this is about, beyond the fact that it’s the more progressive branch of the Democratic party that are supporting this idea.
