Think about how THIRSTY we were for ANY new music back then - how do you think it would have been received as the album's lead single? And how would it have set your expectations for Chromatica? I believe Enigma was the concept of the album before Chromatica, but then she decided to go the popish way with Bloodpop. I had such high hopes but I'm happy it was reduced to filler album track instead of lead single like it probably was meant to be. EDIT: what i mean by "bad song" is that I know Gaga can do better and she did better on Chromatica I'm sure if it was one a Charli XCX album I would enjoy it a lot more. Plus the song is relatable & has a super catchy melody with great production. I def think she should do Sour Candy as the next single though given how much attention it’s getting. She would not have been able to do promo for it because of ASIB. Maybe a one-off single would have worked. But even then it would have disrupted ASIB promo. Even at a different time, Enigma pushes on the boundaries of what the album as a whole sounds like and wouldn't have been a good lead single because of that. I've noticed it's been the slowest grower for most people and also it's very shouty and not everybody likes that in a song. I can't see it being very popular on the radio.
