Disbanding an entire police department isn't unheard of—the city of Camden, New Jersey did it in 2013 and as a result, saw an improvement in the relationship between police and residents as well as a dramatic drop in violent crime.

Scott Thomson, Camden's police chief until last year, oversaw the city's shift to community policing around eight years ago.

At the time, Camden had become synonymous with crime and was considered among the deadliest cities in the U.S.

And that's called reforming which is what I advocate not defunding and abolishing.

Instead of the sad reacts to people who think defunding / abolishing the police is shocking (which, objectively, it is) - can someone please share their insight as to what the implications of this would be? I mean, no police sounds radical and dangerous.

Like if they took two seconds to read the wikipedia page...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camden_County_Police_Department#Establishment_of_county_department

The new department took over primary responsibility for policing the City of Camden on May 1, 2013.[1][2] 155 officers reapplied and were hired for the new department, while 65 officers refused to reapply.[1][2] The new department reached its full complement of 401 sworn officers on June 7, 2013, when 92 recruits were commissioned.[16] The new force doubled the size of the previous city force.

This was my exact thought.  It's so much easier to hit the sad react button than it is to tell us why we're wrong.  Which I'll be happy if I'am!  I'm not here to make enemies... just as a place to exchange ideas/information.

Camden has around 80,000 people. What about a city like New York without a police department ? I'm not sure if you want the police around or not. Another issue is police unions. They are never going to go for this type of thing. How do you keep a city safe without police protection ?

Some of you seem to not understand that defunding doesn’t mean abolishing.

Defunding means to stop allocating money to these police departments as it currently is and investing in other factors that can make crime rise such as education, community centers, food access, community-based police, mental health services, and so many other things.

Not to sound mean, but why did you sad react my post?  I'm against abolition, but for reforming/defunding.

I mean... we need GOOD cops on the force and a new training regimen with better reinforcement by chiefs. To do so, we would need to fund the programs. I think we should defund or penalize those departments that are found guilty of abuse of power and inappropriate actions myself. We do not need lawless streets as well as we do not need lawless enforcement.

Because I found it to be an awful take on the issue. Just because you didn’t have access to whatever information you were trying to find doesn’t mean the other person’s opinion was ignorant

Yeah, I realized that after-wards and edited my post.  It was kind of a "heated" moment.

He would hold the highest level of the executive branch. He might be able to sign some executive orders, but those would be questioned because of state rights. However he could withhold new federal funding for future things if he wanted to. It's how they got states to comply with a minimum drinking age of 21.

Interesting. So that's why every state is 21? I wondered about that

Here in Canada drinking age varies by Province. Here in Ontario for example it's 19 but in Quebec 18

This is a very ignorant post.  I tried looking up community security and all I got was a one paragraph wikipedia page.

Edit: well okay I found more resources.  My google is effed up.  Still not for it 100%.

community policing means there are still police; to me it's a police force that's more familiar to the community, more closely entwined with the community, and ultimately more trusted by the community--like for instance, police would walk the streets instead of driving in cars (i think).

when people say abolish the police i really have no idea what they're thinking tbh. you can't have nobody out there to help you when you call 911 lol. i understand in some places police departments need to be overhauled completely because they're entirely corrupt, but that doesn't mean leave that vacuum there, it means replace it with a police system that's better, with better people.

and ironically joe biden is FOR community policing, i just read that in the paper. community policing is a type of police reform if you ask me because you're taking the police and overhauling its practices to build trust between the police and the community.

Yes. Before, it was varying from 18 to 21. Because the government withholds 10% of federal highway funds for any state in violation, states complied. And because they technically have the choice on whether they want to comply, it's not against the Constitution. So here you can be drafted for war but not be allowed to drink.

Hum interesting

Here in Canada it's a little harder as there's limited funds transfers to them unless they are poor provinces that receive money under the equalization payment program

Our Provinces mostly raise their own money. Like 1/3 of our income taxes are actually Provincial Taxes and most fees or sales taxes are also Provincial so withholding money might not achieve much

We have had issues with sovereignty many times before when Provinces don't wanna comply with Federal Government like the pipeline issues or the carbon tax issues :enigma:
