Would this even be up to him anyway?

If the US is anything like Canada, very little law enforcement has anything to do with Federal Government unless it's something Federal like FBI :enigma:

Lower levels of Government mostly manage the police

Serious question: does he have any power as president even if he wanted to?

For federal law yes.

Most federal crimes for example, don't allow parole at all in the US. The federal government can change that. States are also provided federal funding for their police forces which can be cut.

Of course he is :messga:

If Biden supported it, Trump and Republicans would SCREAM that Democrats want to get rid of police completely. It would only benefit Republicans if Biden was for it

Not for the criminal justice system. :)

Most progressives will tell you they support shorter sentencing and rehabilitation rather than indefinite locking up.

Also, considering the fact that they made specific things illegal to attack black and poc communities, they're disproportionately in prison over it. Example: crack got a much higher mandatory minimum sentence than cocaine. Crack in the US was known for use by the urban black community and cocaine was known to be used by the suburban whites. The advisor to Nixon admitted they were lying when they said it was about the drugs. And black communities are also policed more extensively.

Please educate me. I'd like to name 1, just 1 major city in the US without a police force to lead by example.

This is a very ignorant post.  I tried looking up community security and all I got was a one paragraph wikipedia page.

Edit: well okay I found more resources.  My google is effed up.  Still not for it 100%.

Please view the second video in my second post on the first page. It does a good job explaining what this concept actually is.

Being from the UK it's wild seeing what's been going on in America recently, I'd like to give some thoughts on it because I saw in a video posted in this thread talking about defunding the police and reinvesting elsewhere that the UK was mentioned with mental health being handled by the NHS. I'll start by saying we are nowhere near perfect but in my opinion we are in a much better situation than USA in relation to this issue.

I believe what we are seeing is a culmination of a lot of problems in the American system reaching the surface and people have had enough. Aside from the obvious systemic and overt racism (moreso in America) I think another one of America's big problems is its gun laws and I personally believe that has a lot to do with some of the police brutality you're seeing, racism is just exacerbating the issue. Knowing that almost anyone in America can and will carry a very lethal weapon kickstarts self-preservation decision making when it comes to your police, in a split second someones life could be over. I'm well aware this is part of your second ammendment rights and if these gun laws are restricted you feel like you're losing your rights rather than getting a safer community but the lethality of guns contributes to the "shoot now, ask questions later" mentality I see in American policing. Obviously this does not apply to George Floyd's murder but it does apply to cases like Breonna Taylor. Your police definitely needs a reform of some kind, especially retraining on how to respond to a crime instead of they way they violently deal with everything.

Here in the UK our population and our police force are largely gun free so our police use non-lethal techniques to deal with criminals. Despite the video using us as an example our police forces are still very underfunded so I'm not entirely sure how "defund the police" sits with me. The level of monetary redistribution and specific alternative plans needs to be laid out for people if you want people to get on board with it. Certainly if you abolished the police it would be a disaster waiting to happen.

Regardless, I do hope real and positive change comes from all of what is going on.

Instead of the sad reacts to people who think defunding / abolishing the police is shocking (which, objectively, it is) - can someone please share their insight as to what the implications of this would be? I mean, no police sounds radical and dangerous.

I mean... we need GOOD cops on the force and a new training regimen with better reinforcement by chiefs. To do so, we would need to fund the programs. I think we should defund or penalize those departments that are found guilty of abuse of power and inappropriate actions myself. We do not need lawless streets as well as we do not need lawless enforcement.

I also agree with more emphasis on rehabilitation rather than just being punished forever for justice. I never got the point of locking ppl in a room just sitting there. We been doing that for thousands of years ud think by now we'd have a better system

But progressives sometimes are also the most agressive with comments like "lock him up", "rot for life in jail"

For example such comments often come up with pedophile issues. I think those people need mental help as much as punishment.

Or manslaughter (murder but by accident).

Unless someone is a homicidal maniak or some crazy phychopatic sereal killer I think ppl deserve a second chance but not many ppl seem to believe in that anymore

And internet cancel culture is not helping that mentality. Ppl literally get dragged and their apologies not accepted because of videos that surface of something from 20 years ago :rip:

Good luck with that. Some members that's their literal specialty with any remark they don't agree with

I never sad react anyone (or lmao) out of purely disagreeing cuz I find it disrespectful AF

There are police at every level of government, federal marshals, fbi, etc at the federal level, state police, county sheriffs, city police, campus police, military police. They each operate within their jurisdictions and each has a set of laws established by each jurisdiction that they are responsible for enforcing.

I don't like the chant to defund police. It doesn't say enough and what it does say sounds like anarchy.

I don't want to live in anarchy. I don't want to have to take a loaded ak47 to the grocery store and fight off neighborhood gangs to go about normal life. In fact, some of the graffiti on the burned out buildings in Minneapolis were the Anarchy symbol, a circled A.

That is not what we want! Not what I want!

We need everyone that wears a badge and gun for work to wear a body camera that records everything they say and do. That takes money. Other reforms take money. The criminals that arsoned buildings, and the criminals that stole merchandise from Minneapolis stores may get away with it. Are any of them volunteering to pay reparations for their crimes of arson and theft, no. No. They have no intention of paying back for their crimes. It took calling up the military, 10,000 guard troops to get the criminals to stop burning and stealing in Minneapolis.

"Defund the police" is not the correct path forward. Reforms are. A functioning society needs funded police, because we are occupied by local and international criminals that have zero regard for law and order.

This post is not about crimes by police. This post is about crimes by non-police that we have the police for.

Some of you seem to not understand that defunding doesn’t mean abolishing.

Defunding means to stop allocating money to these police departments as it currently is and investing in other factors that can make crime rise such as education, community centers, food access, community-based police, mental health services, and so many other things.

You should probably put this in the OP cuz clearly a lot of people don't understand this at all - they think defunding means you will have no law enforcement...

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!
