Would "Yoü And I" Have Worked As a 2nd Single?

Let's say it was early May 2011 and Gaga released her second single, "Yoü And I", from her upcoming album, Born This Way.

Do you think a decision like this would have benefited Gaga in any way during this era? Would the single have done well? Would this become one of her signature hits?

I believe it would have shocked the public (in a good way) because it's so left field for someone like Gaga to release around this time. They would've been like "finally a ballad from this strange Lady!"(or at least her version of a ballad. They would have expected another dance track but instead she hits them out of nowhere with this awesome, intimate, and radio friendly ballad/track. This would have created some buzz.

This is what was supposed to happen! I hated that Gaga didn't take many risks musically wise during this era, and if she did it was too late. She released the familiar and typical Gaga track Judas as 2nd single that backfired, TEOG was so rushed and schedule so butchered I can't even (for such an awesome track!), don't even mention release of MTN and YAI, they didn't get their moment to properly shine and to be fully appreciated.

If she released this I think she would have been seen in a different light. She would've kept that mystique aura of herself as unpridictable and still unknown superstar. I know this is the past but I really like to imagine what could have happened. I mean Gaga was at her PRIME!!! I know it sold well but it deserves to be recognized as one of her top hits, especially from early in her career.

What do you think? Discuss!

That’s actually an interesting idea, I wish they’d have done that instead of Judas and The Edge of Glory, it’d have been interesting to see. Then TEOG after album release.

I would have loved it as a 1st single. It would have made an interesting turn in Gaga's career.

Honestly, it would have been a good change up for Gaga at the time. To hear something a little different in her discography would have meant Born This Way would have been even more successful than it is now. It also would have given the GP the variety has in her music that she is now known for. You and I was a missed opportunity, such a great song.

Judas was a great song but was too controversial for it's time especially coming after such a bold statement as Born This Way. i think people's minds would have been blown if you and i came out BEFORE the album.

Maybe.... But I remember feeling like you & i was the worst single choice, and not because it is a bad song, but because we had already heard it for like an entire year before the album itself came out. by the time it was released as a single we had already had it for like 1.5 years lol ugh i just remember being so bored

it did, well unofficially, but she performed it on the tail end of the monster ball. no more shocking than speechless tbh

It's actually something that could've worked. The GP was going through a tremendous Adele love anyway, so they were up for a ballad.

It could've gone like this:

Feb - Born This Way

May - Yoü & I

Jul - The Edge of Glory

October/November - Scheiße

No, I feel like it would be too drastic of a change in sound from Born This Way. Especially on a worldwide scale where people outside of America aren’t into country-rock/pop.

I’m actually really happy it performed as well as it did in the US. I never wanted it as a single but things turned out great for it. :) Definitely a career highlight for sure. It actually has a special place in my heart (of course so does the entire album).

I remember when I heard the studio version for the first time I didn’t like it, nor the instrumental. It took literally months to grow on me. It was always my least favorite on the album from the start (but it’s not anymore).

Exactly! It's a new album and era,  she was supposed to move on from her TFM image. I guess her label was scared of such a sudden change and tried to keep it with Judas. Era like this would have been magical and different!

2011:

1. Born This Way (February)- Get the message across.

2. Yoü And I (May) Shocking and surprising! Summer ballad classic!😁

3. The Edge Of Glory (August)- Would have kept the album's momentum and hype. Great autumn track and feel!

4. Marry The Night (December)- Nice winter track and end to an era! span widget

But the point is that it's a new era and she had to move on from TFM image. And Gaga was known to be unpredictable, such is the case with Bad Romance. Some people thought it'd flop due to its weirdness, yet it became a classic! Yoü And I could've worked also because it was so different in that point in time from her other stuff.

Yes! Everything they thought they knew about Gaga and then BOOM! YAI comes out and smacks them in the face! A country rock ballad after a gay, loud and proud anthem! Grab them unsuspecting people by the balls Gaga!
