Head Empty

I need some education on this part. What kind of music would fit under "urban"? Rap, RnB and Hip Hop?

And what umbrella term will they use instead?

I wonder how the "urban" artists feel about this.

Black artists have been speaking out against the 'urban' label for ages.

Tyler the Creator when he won his Grammy: "It sucks that whenever we — and I mean guys that look like me — do anything that's genre-bending or that's anything they always put it in a rap or urban category. I don't like that 'urban' word — it's just a politically correct way to say the n-word to me."

Thanks for informing me. I wasn't quite aware of the fact that people use it for racial stereotypes

Yikes :deadbanana:

but the same logic could be used for "white" and "black" music. Country isn't "white" although many people call it that, all races use that genre and segregating music genres based on skin colour is a no-no for me. I know many people of colour use it to feel like they belong and it IS part of an identity, but i think it isolates people more and more and creates this weird aura between races (and race in my opinion is just generalisation and definitely a social construct that can or may not be used for GOOD purposes, but cons outweigh pros in my opinion). This is just my opinion and i come from Europe so i may not fully understand the UK and the US viewpoint on such things.

I'm glad that if "urban" hurts the community, they definitely made a right decision by removing it. I was just like ??what when i heard about this and thought it refered to urban as in "young, modern, fresh". I'm sorry about that comment. Thanks!

‘Urban music’ is a term just used to describe Pop music created by black artists all the time and it’s irritating. For instance, Beyoncé’s Lemonade is a Pop album, but it gets shuffled into the Urban album Category yet Thank U, Next gets nominated in the Pop category.

There’s just R&B / Pop.
