Am I the only one who feels this way?

Jackson took the spotlight because it was being real. Sometimes that happens in real life where relationships can affect careers and it affected there relationship.  he was trying to drag ally down with him. You clearly don’t like the story line and that’s ok :huntyga:

Sorry but that's exactly my point.. :noparty: I literally am here explaining that the whole movie is not about Ally being a star but about Jackson who actually takes away the spotlight with his problems.. And that's false.. I like the movie and the story line which IMO is not about a star being born..

Oh ok fair enough. I’ve watched the movie like 5 times so I got a bit passionate about it :laughga:

I thought that was kind of the point (or one of the points) of this iteration of ASIB -- to show how destructive alcoholism and codependent relationships are, and how those things worm their way into most or all aspects of both partners' lives.

Exactly the point I was trying to make. I felt like the main point of the movie was alcoholism and codependent relationships which IMO never reflected on Ally..

Oh geez I see how that was your point now -- sorry, I thought you were getting at something else in your OP. Sorry about my misunderstanding

So you didn't feel like the attention was mainly on Jackson? Okay that's fair..

Nah, not really. I see where you're coming from kinda, but I feel like the film hinges on both of them. Their relationship and changing status is extremely cause and effect. I think the purpose is to show the up and the down. She's a rising star, he's a tragic one, and they both influence each other's paths heavily.

I think it's because we can talk about these issues in a way we couldn't when the other movies were made. I can definitely see the argument that "It's not right that the man got the spotlight," but I would also argue with past versions "It's not right that we're so focused on how his mental health impacted her instead of seeing his experience with it." I don't think it would be right to make a movie like ASIB in today's culture and not have half the focus on the journey with addiction and depression.

I guess I never really thought of it like that before.

I mean, when someone's DIRECTING, PRODUCING, WRITING, and STARRING in a film, I guess it's hard to not think they're REALLY acting in self-interest.

But the movie was actually based on both Jackson AND Ally. I know the title is "A Star Is Born", but it wasn't meant to be just centered on Ally, because obviously Jackson had a lot to do with Ally becoming successful. It really was more of a love story than a music film, even though music was a major part of it. So it had to focus on Jackson's story more until he killed himself.

(Hopefully that made sense.)

Maybe he wanted an Oscar...who doesn’t! But I think he wanted to tell a different story. And I think the story he told was powerful and delivered what he wanted. But I don’t think he tried to minimize her part. I actually thought it was completely balanced for the story that was being told

I'd just like to say that I don't think it's not right that the focus in on him. I'm not trying to spread some feminism SJW message here. I'm just saying that I truly believe Bradley wanted those Oscars and he made the movie about his character which is okay and I think it shouldn't be called A Star Is Born because it doesn't really go there.. A star being born always felt like a side story in the movie IMO.

Completely agree with this part BUT don't you think that the main story being told is actually about Jackson's problems?

I don’t know if it’s because he wanted an Oscar, but I agree with you. I can’t think of any scenes in the film that are only focused on Ally, but there are plenty of scenes with just Jackson that have nothing to do with Ally. Also, Ally doesn’t even have a last name.

I see... I watched previous versions and lead male character is always troubled but the focus is never on them so I think that actually shaped my opinions on this

Exactly the way I feel and I truly think that if the movie is A Star Is Born then it should be the other way around..

Gracious Gaga

didn't he write it also? I know he directed it.  but yeah I mean if you're the writer & director, would not be hard to make it all about you LOL

but yeah I wish it was more focused on Ally . and I'm bias because I love Gaga . if Gaga had nothing to do w/ this movie & a different actress was cast I prob wouldn't have noticed tho that she was overshadowed by Jackson, In terms of writing.

Yes...but I feel he had to use the name because it IS a reworking if a star is born and he wanted it that way, just told from a different perspective
