Brazil has the third-highest number of novel coronavirus cases in the world, according to official figures released Monday, a troubling surge for a country struggling to respond to the pandemic.

With 254,220 confirmed cases, Brazil has now surpassed Britain, Spain and Italy in the past 72 hours on the list of total infections, and is behind only the United States (1.5 million) and Russia (290,000).

Brazil has registered 16,792 COVID-19 deaths, the sixth-highest toll in the world.

But experts say under-testing means the real figures could be 15 times higher or more.

Far-right President Jair Bolsonaro compares the virus to a "little flu," condemns the "hysteria" surrounding it and is urging the country to get back to work to stop an economic crash.

State and local authorities, however, are largely calling on citizens to stay home and practice social distancing -- backed by the Supreme Court, which gave them the final say in the matter.

I knew this would happen, sadly.

I was in Brazil last summer and it was one of my favourite trips ever, because Brazil is such an amazing country and the people are sooooo nice. But there are so many of them living together in very small space, especially in the Favelas. So the fact that Bolsonaro didn't do anything about it is just frustrating. It's like, he sees this as a way to get rid of the favelas all together

That's what happens when people pick an id!ot as their president. It is so important to vote for the right person.

The same is going to happen here in Chile with Piñera. What a bunch of clowns :flop:

The clownery of Bolsonaro is far from an end.

It’s so impressive the amount of dumb leaders the world is having these days.

Unfortunately thousands of people will die because of them and its not fair.

the brazilian thread needs to come through

but OT, the president for sure has a HUGE guilt on it, because at the very beginning of social distancing people were respecting it, but it was a weekend when he stated that it wasn't necessary - the next monday, suddenly the streets were crowded again

Mister G

Trump, Putin and Bolsonaro. Talk about the Axis of Evil right there. Three of the worst with three of the highest rates and I’m sure they will at some point start saying the total numbers are fake and an attempt to smear their presidencies/leadership.

The president himself walks around the crowds of his supporters with no mask! That’s such an embarrassment for Brazilian people, and especially now that he won’t contribute to the worlds fund for the covid vaccine

We really should be looking on a per capita basis tho

Brazil has way more population than all those Countries...

Same when we compare US cases to other Countries

Yeah, even though the president is a mess fighting with his ministers we cannot forget the fact that Brazil is a huge country.
