Gaga is also a very private person, she wanted to keep her personal life & career separate in a way. Stage names are doing exactly that. It gives a performer a sense of belonging and something to bring to life. Her stage name is what Wendy Starland & Rub Fusari helped her create. Essentially it was a way to free herself of the truth and become stronger. I think it's largely why she never was able to deal with her rape until years later.
