JohnyTheSame 1,247
I was a bit shocked when in Cromatica promo Joanne was refered as Gaga's deeply personal work. I can get the backround of the name and the tragedy of her family, but lyrically except Joanne track I dont see any other song talking about that incident nor any other deeply personal about Gaga. Maybe perfect illusion about her feeling betrayed and angel down. ARTPOP in the other hand i think that most songs tell us about deep thought and past trauma of Gaga. ARTPOP, Aura, Applause express the vision of Gaga for artisty and a describe about how she define herselfas an artist (maybe Fashion! too). Mary Jane Holland and Dope describe the drug struggles of her. Swine is about her rappist. GUY and Sexxx Dreams are stong songs about her sexual desires. Man-i-cure is a strong female empowering song. Donatella and Venus are just fun songs I think and Jewels and Drugs is song I ve never understood. So i think ARTPOP was for me the album that helped me understand Gaga most. Tell us your opinions I think ARTPOP is deeply underrated
Candy Gaga 5,374
If it was really personal to her she wouldn't have abandoned it And what's personal about Fashion , Donatella or JND The production is also tragic . I think ARTPOP is her weakest project
Kubi 1,126
I think she specifically called out Joanne and ASIB on the Chromatica poster because those are sooooo stylistically different from Chromatica, where ARTPOP isn't as different. Also, maybe she doesn't want to remember ARTPOP. It wasn't exactly the greatest time in her life. You can hear that when you listen to the album, it's all very downtrodden/heavy behind the beats. That's not to say it's not a good album, it's probably my most listened to from Gaga. they call me angela vidal

Diamond Heart - About her go-go career, how a “cruel king” made her see the real world at a young age, where she had to become more tough to fight for herself and deal with her problems. 2. A-YO - about the haters... it’s really just a fun song, but it’s also a huge f you to those who criticize her 3. Joanne - you already know 4. John Wayne - her need for “a wild man”... her desire for men that lead her to troubled relationships (not a new topic in her discography... hello Judas) 5. DIC - about touching, how much more personal can you get (again she’s done this topic) 6, 7, 8. PI, MR, SP - all have to do with relationship problems, obviously specific to her most longterm and serious relationship. 9. Come To Mama - Not really personal, but about acceptance which is important to her (again, nothing new, BTW) 10. Female empowerment, how she’s personally been pitted against other women in the industry and how she’s decided to tackle this problem. 11. AD - not really personal again but an important topic to her 12. Grigio Girls - I mean, lyrically this is really personal. About her friend. 13. JAD - Probably the least inspired track. Still a bop But yeah Joanne is head to toes (well, knee) filled with personal stories and opening up. ARTPOP has its personal tracks, but some songs are literally as she said meant to be fun pop songs about basic love and sex. And that’s great too. Also she released it after the height of her debut album, she poured all that emotion to us when she was at the top of her game instead of releasing The Fame pt. 2. Tom Nook 37,808
Gaga pours some of her personal life in other albums not just ARTPOP, Joanne is just so sonically and visually different from other albums, every song on it has something to do with her, her relationships, her beliefs, or even going back to her roots playing piano at a bar in New York ala Come to Mama & Just Another Day Uh Red Wine... Convict... Gah Gah...

You picked three songs off the album lol...Shall we talk about the rest? Swine, Gypsy, Dope, Applause, ARTPOP, Do What U Want

crybrowz 3,313
I agree. She def gets heavier with the subject matter in ARTPOP, particularly on songs like DWUW, Swine, MJH, and Dope. Rape and drug abuse is about as personal as it gets. Joanne is definitely personal too, esp on songs like DH and MR, but I don't think we get as close of a look into her psyche on that album as we do on ARTPOP. Rio 5,088
Won't ever understand the ARTPOP disregarders/haters who think ARTPOP isn't at all personal on many levels. The album was released during the lowest point of her career and mental health. You can literally feel her anger and emotion and pain through many of the songs. She conveys all this through the lyric content, music and production. Retrospective reviews will treat this album amazingly in years to come, you watch. Nothing sounded like ARTPOP at the time, or ever will. Many more monsters are coming to appreciate it for good reason. I get Joanne is to some degree more personal, but always found Joanne to be a course corrective album for her career, it was a tool to rebuild her fanbase and show the world her raw talent. It was like an intentional pivot and she had to make it. Almost forced. ARTPOP was natural (she had a vision, even if it was ****ed up or over-indulgent), beautifully chaotic, messy, and portrayed her character and mind at the time. The Do What U Want performance on the AMAs is one of her deepest live performances, if not, the deepest.
