Derrick615 12
Perfect Illusion is her career defining song. Simply by writing, recording, and releasing this song she was able to: 1. Acknowledge the past , her portrayal (and part of the construction of identity) and every stepping stone in her career, which she always had been apprehensive of displaying. 2. Safely address the larger than life “Lady Gaga” and transition into the “I’m an artist in life” Lady Gaga.. 3. Reaffirm that she will always fight for the right to be the artist/woman she wants to be. You guys have to look past the inherent performative ideals pop artists portray and recognize the symbolism and true intent within an artist’s content.(&) The self-referential duality it acknowledges in the “Perfect Illusion.” Both in her participation, and the life we saw. President Biden 5,898
yeah PI was a bad lead choice. I think honestly that a ballad would’ve made the perfect lead. It’s a huge 360, but honestly Sinner’s Prayer could’ve been a great single on Adult Contemporary & Country radio. Country radio is MASSIVE and CONSTANT promo. Imagine: “Lady Gaga goes country, drops new lead Sinner’s Prayer” circa Sept 2016 AYO as promo single sometime in mid October Followed by John Wayne as single 2 to coincide with the album release, shifted to Thanksgiving (presuming SP was a hit, mirrors ARTPOP release). A true rock country hit! MR released in January with Grammys performance, followed by Superbowl bump. Diamond Heart as single 4 later in spring to launch the Joanne Ball tour. Massive music video, very Americana themed. Summer hit Finishes with title track Joanne being the fifth and final single in end of August. Honestly, Joanne songs had lots of hit potential. I’d say the only songs that would not blow up were PI, DIC, and Hey Girl. They are just a bit too odd. I could even see Come to Mama having some potential. I got drunk

Gagas lil monster 2,432
Okay, let me rant. I have nothing but respect for the Joanne album, and it will always have a special place in my heart. In saying that though it is my least favourite album. Only because I prefer more pop songs that her previous albums especially ARTPOP (Fight me). While it was clearly Gaga trying to make her more relatable to her, the GP also prefer upbeat pop music. While Joanne is a Greta album, I'm afraid it was never to be her most successful album (yes it was successful and I am in no way saying either wise). Btw this is my opinion so please do not drag me for it With Peace and love

Joshie S 6,076
The way Joanne was released was still quintessential 'Lady Gaga'. I don't think many realise that. For her to go for a completely simplistic *looking* approach, was so smart. Stefani is a business woman, she knows what she's doing and how things need to be perceived. There's moments in FF2 where after a meeting or after the album was done, you saw her just being alone in her mind smiling, knowing that what she's creating is 'Lady Gaga' in every way. Even Joanne. The melody that you choose can rescue you ♥
voidfigure 1,612
Honestly I think Joanne didn't need to be bigger: it is what it is, a stripped back and personal album which cleaned up Gaga's public image. Overexposure would have been damaging again, and I personally wanted Gaga to be recognized for her immense talent: I've never heard so many people praising her around me like they did during Joanne era, I think it was a well balanced release. retrosexual123 905
The problem with Joanne was that: - it wasn’t unapologetically Country or unapologetically pop this meant that it was all a mishmash and Gaga wasn’t fully committing to either. It isn’t a great country record and it isn’t a great pop record because it was still trying to please too many people at once. In my opinion: - she should have gone all the way country and released a proper country album: something like Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves for example. - she should have been much more honest and unapologetic about the whole thing. - not literally brought up her aunt so many times and maybe found a more relatable way to express what she was feeling. I think Joanne is a cute record but nothing special or memorable because it was trying to do too many things at once and thus did none of them properly...
