Coronavirus case from December discovered in France

A French hospital that retested old samples from pneumonia patients has discovered that it treated a man with the coronavirus as early as 27 December, nearly a month before the French government confirmed its first cases.

Dr Yves Cohen, head of resuscitation at the Avicenne and Jean Verdier hospitals in the northern suburbs of Paris, told BFM TV that scientists had retested samples from 24 patients treated in December and January who tested negative for flu.

The samples had all initially been collected to detect flu using PCR tests, the same genetic screening process that can also be used to detect the presence of the coronavirus. Each sample was retested several times to ensure that there were no errors, he added.

“He was sick for 15 days and infected his two children, but not his wife, who works in a supermarket,” he said.

“He was amazed. He didn’t understand how he had been infected. We put the puzzle together and he had not made any trips. The only contact that he had was with his wife.”

No surprise, given that there were other suspected cases outside China in december, while patient zero in China infection is currently valued by scientists to be happened in October

Aye same. I had the flu for a solid month from late December to almost February. And minor symptoms kept on for like half of February

MY bf works as a nurse and he brought one respiratory illness home in February. First - he was sick. A week later I get sick. Since the fever wasnt huge I decided to go to work and one by one my colleagues took the sick days. 

 

I think we had corona because I never felt so sick. My lungs almost cancelled my existance.

So perhaps it wasn’t the flu that knocked me out for a week a half on Valentine’s day and started with dry coughing and had me in high fever for days? I also had recurring symptoms for another 3-4 weeks afterwards. I did suspect that it was not regular, like I felt different than I usually do while having the flu. Who knows.

The only way to know is to get an antibody test! Just to make sure

I think I got Covid in late february when I attended Milan FW and right during those days the very first confirmed cases from Italy started popping out exponentially. I had high fever, loss of appetite, loss of taste (not in music tho), dry cough and minor backache. It lasted 5 days. There were so many suspected cases among my friends too, especially in Lombardy, but they NEVER had the opportunity to get tested, as hospitals were suddenly being overrun by the most severe cases and 118 (which is our 911) was all clogged up and doctors became unavailable. March was catastrophic here.

I know people hate it when other people say that and I haven't taken a test YET, but I honestly think I could have had it. I had the exact symptoms and I was so sick and felt terrible in December and January, I was sick for a month. And I was travelling a lot during that time, so maybe I was in contact with someone who had it.

In any case, I wanna get a test to be sure.

This thing has been around for MONTHS. Like swine flu in 2009. 

Otherwise, it would've been contained like SARS. 

In Luxembourg they'll test the whole population, and THEN they'll do antibody tests. 

There was also an unusually strong flu season in the US, as well as thousands of extra deaths in France than average.

SARS was way less contagious. SARS-2 was described as nearly as identical as SARS but with two slight mutations radically changing both contagiousness (higher) and mortality (lower)

It’s pretty clear China made a mistake (I hope not intentionally) and it got out at least back in December maybe even October ... maybe even earlier. 
 

it certainly didn’t only first appear when they say it did, all that changed is we knew what to look for - that’s it. 
 

also antibody tests currently aren’t very accurate so I wouldn’t bank on that yet
