But it's no where near the difference in between USA and Sweden in pop and structure. Not all states in the USA where under lockdown. Sweden has not even the same movement of people inside or coming from outside its borders. Argentina and Brazil are similar in many ways. But I won't even bother anymore. Kindness rules all. I don't think you can't compare numbers without taking into account the context. But don't worry, you'll be able to visit your local Starbucks soon enough. Kindness rules all. Quasi 11,034
Honestly not informed enough to make an opinion but I am biased towards listening to medical professionals (there's a reason why they're professionals) and being on the safe side and staying indoors. I don't wanna get anyone's mom and pop sick. On a side note, just the shear rudeness of some people in this thread... I don't understand pineapples, so I don't eat bananas. Brazil ignored the virus, denied its existence, looked the other way, it did almost nothing to fight this. This cant be compared with many countries in the world. And no. not because of lockdowns, because countries that didn't follow lockdowns had the same (or even less) deaths than us. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/last-years-flu-broke-records-for-deaths-and-illnesses-new-cdc-numbers-show/2018/09/26/97cb43fc-c0ed-11e8-90c9-23f963eea204_story.html https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-19/sweden-says-controversial-covid-19-strategy-is-proving-effective "If we compare, for instance, the number of people who died in the United States from COVID-19 in the second full week of April to the number of people who died from influenza during the worst week of the past seven flu seasons (as reported to the CDC), we find that the novel coronavirus killed between 9.5 and 44 times more people than seasonal flu." "the CDC’s reported number of actual confirmed flu deaths—that is, counting flu deaths the way we are currently counting deaths from the coronavirus—has ranged from 3,448 to 15,620, " Thats 15.620 deaths in 1 year (365 days) compared to 62k deaths in 3 months (89 days) (still growing with 2k deaths a day btw) https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/comparing-covid-19-deaths-to-flu-deaths-is-like-comparing-apples-to-oranges/ Sweden's strategy only works because their population is spread out and listens to the actions taken by the governement instead of going out 13 hours ago, Maleficent said: NYC used less than 60% of hospital resources it thought it would. Beds sat empty, a Military ship remained unused in port. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/10/nyregion/new-york-coronavirus-hospitals.html Isnt that a thing to celebrate? Anyway the original ICU beds wouldnt have been sufficient, they needed slightly more then 5000 beds but only had around 3000. The 'normal' hospital beds were quite a lot tho, but its better to be safe then getting to send away patients because there arent any beds anymore https://champ.gothamist.com/champ/gothamist/news/coronavirus-statistics-tracking-epidemic-new-york 13 hours ago, Maleficent said: That 4$ cup of coffee represents countless jobs in south america and africa, allowing people in those countries to feed their families and barely keep above the poverty line. It works a little, but with how many other disastrous effects? We can do this with every virus, but we dont do it for a reason. I'm talking about other social distancing measures. Brazil didnt have any. In comparasions, Sweden closed part of their schools, made new rules for restaurants, banned large events, closed nursing homes, encouraged people to work from home and other measures.
