What's the idea of Mowgli's Road M/V by MARINA?

marina and her legs:

I love this music video, I don't know why but I really love it. I watched it uncountable times but I am still not sure about the idea of this video. Was it just supposed to be weird?

A couple of days ago I found this comment on YouTube: yet another unrealistic body expectations for girls. And I thought this is a very good concept!

Anyway, what do you think?

I legit don't know what this music video, the song and half of the Family Jewels' lyrics mean

If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

a blasphemy :air:

long story short, The Family Jewels is a perfect satire of fame, famous life, stereotypes, but mostly about what society expects from you in your life/success/profession/marriage and how toxic it is.

Sugar, spice, and everything nice.

I think it's about her slowly losing creative control over her songs and career ( the song also had the lyric: I don't know who I want to be) hence the paper limbs (cuz you can't control things with paper hands). Love this video so much.

I read explanation of this song on Genius Lyrics. What if these plastic legs and arms mean she's trying to fit pop industry? :oprah:

I guess she's not feeling stable in her life cause everyone tries to control her and tell her what exactly to do. Marina wanted to be an artist and take that forsaken road (and by that she doesn't feel too confident at first), but that's not what everybody expected of her, she was supposed to not be a dreamer, but a person with stable plans for her future. That's what I get from that.

Sugar, spice, and everything nice.

Not helpful in the conversation at all but I always found it so funny how, in this video, she's so weird and all over the place, but still has the same hair as every trendy girl at the time :ladyhaha:

Ten silver spoons coming after meeee :what:

We are the spoons, they're telling me
We scooped our way into your dreams,
To knock the knives out bloody cold,
And lead you down the unforsaken road

This is quite similar to what I read on Genius Lyrics about the meaning of the song.

It makes sense.

It’s about there being two roads in fame and the industry. When I wrote it, I didn’t know whether I was meant to be some kind of weird indie artist or a big pop thing. At the end of the day, I just thought, “You can be both if you want”. I’m a leftfield artist but I want to be really successful. You know, I think celebrity culture and sexuality in pop music is really important, but I want there to be an alternative for people.

The whole song and its video is a  is a reference to the character in Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.

It takes Mowgli as the main character 'cause he himself didn't know what road to take, he wasn't like the animals around him, but as it is all that he has known his entire life, he struggles finding his path.

The weird legs and bird sound is a reference to the scene of the vultures making fun of his legs calling them "stork-like” legs.

I guess it's also a way of saying she's a little mad/crazy at people forcing her to go on a specific direction on her career/artistry. You can also see that she's confused and not very clear on how to continue and that's why her legs are weak and puppet like.
