An asteroid more than a mile wide is set to make a pass by Earth, although scientists insist it poses no danger.

Known as (52768) 1998 OR2, the asteroid will come to about 3.9 million miles away on Wednesday – 16 times further than the distance to the Moon – when it makes its closest approach.

Scientists have joked that the latest image of the asteroid look like it is wearing a mask due to dust and debris passing around it.

“Although this asteroid is not projected to impact Earth, it is important to understand the characteristics of these types of objects to improve impact-risk mitigation technologies,” Dr Virkki added.

I wonder if it will cause some kind of small gravitational effect or something. Interesting!

Edit: yes, I now realise it says 'millions' of miles away, I realise I am a dumby :huntyga:

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

Should be negligible. Much smaller than than the moon and 16 times further away. Distance effect alone should be 256x less.

As if 39 miles/62km isn't basically scraping the earths surface :laughga:

And OP was nice enough to respond with this:

I was like '3.9 miles miles? That m doesn't need to be there' and I just completely ignored how close 3.9 miles would actually be :laughga:

And then I realised it stood for million :flop:

Do you feel him sir?
