North Pole to be completely ice-free in 20-30 years

Summer Arctic sea-ice is predicted to disappear before 2050, resulting in devastating consequences for the Arctic ecosystem. The efficacy of climate-protection measures will determine how often and for how long. These are the results of a new study involving 21 research institutes from around the world, including McGill University.

The North Pole is presently covered by sea-ice all year. Each summer, the area of sea-ice coverage decreases and grows again in winter. However, as a result of global warming, the overall area of the Arctic Ocean covered by sea-ice has reduced rapidly over the past few decades. According to the researchers, this substantially affects the Arctic ecosystem and climate. The sea-ice cover is a hunting ground and habitat for polar bears and seals and keeps the Arctic cool by reflecting sunlight.

“While the Arctic sea-ice extent is decreasing during this transition to an ice-free Arctic, the year-to-year variability in extent greatly increases, making life more difficult for local populations and ice-dependent species,” says co-author Bruno Tremblay, Associate Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at McGill.

The biggest winners in this are Russia, Canada, US, Denmark and Norway, as they will have direct access and rights to an important brand new trade route.

Russia in particular being so dependent on fossil fuels it's no wonder they are not worried about climate change.

Well, Russian citizens wouldn't support it, there is -20/40 for 9 months literally, so they will be even happy with  climate change. Moreover, people are very poor there: you can care about climate change, waste sorting, and equal rights when you are provided with everything. They think about having enough money just to survive in the first place.

People, use your voice. Go vote, inform other people about the climate crisis. Just because Corona is happening doesn‘t mean this even bigger catastrophe is not here anymore. If we all just raise awareness about this issue in our own community, we all together act as a global force. If we don’t, governments and companies won‘t do ****. The thread title is a bit dramatic as in the reference article it is said "in the summer", meaning the Artic ice is still there for the rest of the year. Besides, it says there are different simulations with scenarios based on different levels of CO2 emissions: "If emissions are reduced rapidly, ice-free years only occur occasionally. With higher emissions, the Arctic Ocean will become ice-free in most years." The point of the research is to highlight the issue with the Artic fauna survival, including polar bears.
