1.8M Undocumented In Canada Desperate For Help They Can Qualify For

I totally empathize with that woman and the 1 million 'illegals' who are now finding themselves in a tough situation. I think being 'illegal' is kind of an illusion, borders are illusions to me (yeah I know I sound like I'm high but that's the truth), and my grandpa came to France legally as he found work there. You really have to be in such a desperate situation if you have to come 'illegally' but the truth of the matter is, if you have no paper and you have done something 'illegal' what can the government do? If I was part of the government I would 100% help these people, but then what will happen to them? It's very urgent that people find a way to do things in the LEGAL way because otherwise they can end up in very traumatizing situations where the kids stay in one country and the parents are gone, or now, that you stay on the streets homeless because u have no damn papers. Again if you look at it from the law, they've done something illegal but if you look at it with a human heart, they've sacrificed to get a better life

Canada is a mess

Coming from someone living in a country where their president is Trump and they'll have to pick between Biden & Orange man soon, where people are rioting to not stay at home and call the virus a conspiracy, where the healthcare is a privilege and inequality is at its max, it's very uncalled for to say Canada is a mess. Very uncalled for

We really gonna pretend as if it’s not used in a demeaning and derogatory manner, which is rude and ****ed up?

That's the problem with some of you. You are stuck on the terminology and ignore the article. :triggered:

Lol I can't believe you are getting mad about the term "illegal"... it's a fact, that's what they are, now let's focus on the real issue: they'll end up on the street

I mean legal terminology is also "alien" and "handicapped" yet we hardly call people those. :selena:

There was a time when "retarded" and "idiot" were actual medical terms. They aren't anymore. But there was a time when people had stopped using it but it was still in medical books. Language changes as society evolves.

Is handicapped really considered offensive or insensitive? I’ve never heard anyone call it out as such. It doesn’t cross my mind as a bad word. What word is preferred? Disabled?

That seems really high :air:

Is it as difficult to become a citizen in Canada as it is in the US? Can the government not simply allow them to become citizens and then file for aide?

I don't know what they plan to do

But 9% seems high to me too. I can only assume the figures must also include temporary workers that don't actually get a legal visa not just ppl who love here all year

It's a thing for people to come here temporary for seasonal work for 2-3 months for farm work picking for example. Work Canadians never want to do

That's obviously not the case of the person in OP but I assume the figures must Include those people as well

@Economy I love you sis, but please change title, having no legal status does not define those people, it's not okay to qualify them as 'illegals'.

Back on topic, we are talking about devoted people who only hoped for a better life for them and their children, it's not a crime. This is time we show show humanity and solidarity towards each other

hey maybe change the racist title of your thread it's been an hour

Wait what? That word is a taboo now? Since when? This is literally the term I've always hear and I legit never heard of it being refered to as rude :duck:. Is it a bigger thing in the US?

I don't get it. It's refering to their paperwork? Is this a new PC thing? How did this become a rude thing?

I'll change it tho

This is very sad. Unless they’re paying taxes and premiums for EI and such, it’s gonna be hard to get access to financial support. They’d prob need to amend the CERB to include every single person but idek how that’s systemically possible or fiscally responsible.
The only solution is to cancel mortgage and interest payments in order for that to trickle down to rent. Which won’t happen.

Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time.

Guys I'm sorry I actually genuinely did not know this was considered rude terminology. It's how I always heard it. I was just thinking of the legal status. I've changed it.

But u guys have a lot to learn about "educating" people in a kind way. I can't stand some of u here

All everyone had to do was point it out

@FATCAT @PartySick honestly just lock the thread. It was meant to be news about something but the entire thread just turned into this and can't say I'm surprised. I'm done with this site honestly

"Disabled" is generally the preferred term among most of the disability community(not all obviously) as opposed to "handicapped" or some of the "differently abled", "special needs", "person with a disability" phrases. It's not necessarily "bad" but just preferred terminology

Agreed. Illegal sounds heavy but it is ultimately what makes them different from everyone else. It's our culture and our imagery that adds other meanings onto illegal. I think 'illegal workers' is probably a fairer word to use though.

As a foreign worker also in Canada, my heart does go out to them, they face a lot of uncertainty and are in an extremely difficult position. But as someone who has worked to legally be in Canada, I'm a little more skeptical.

It's important we note that they are not deemed refugees, or have refugee status, and have lied to or disobeyed immigration. Alongside their employers (who are likely Canadian), they are contributing to slowing wage growth which affects residents, increasing the rich-poor gap for those already in Canada. I don't doubt their motives for wanting a better life, but the system exists for a reason - this is a painful but real consequence of not following it.

I do know in Ontario, they are opening free provincial healthcare to people who might not automatically have it because of the virus. So kudos to them for being more lenient.
