But Taiwan has a president, has its own army, has democracy, has their own currency, law, language etc. They are literally a country if you try to read history.

History can tell you why Taiwan become this if you really know history. No matter how it looks, Taiwan is not acknowledged as a country by most of countries except USA etc. in the world.

They are too simple to be able to differentiate between supporting an organisation focused on helping frontline workers now vs. their own political projection.

Hong Kong wanted to warn the world but the pro-China government censored everything.

Taiwan has been sending out medical equipment after the virus is under control within the country. You can’t help the world if your country is on fire.

Gaga really never catches a break with Asian politics. At one hand, Chinese boycott her for meeting Dalai, at another she is boycotted by Taiwanese and HK-ers for this. :selena:

Miss Taylor who never touches onto these topics is loved by both sides.

Love Gaga’s kind spirit but these types of backlash will hurt career here.

I love the concert she organized and her intentions are pure but honestly the WHO is going to likely be under serious scrutiny in the near future because the fact that they are likely a puppet for China and are parroting Chinese political stances has emerged, together with the fact they purposely ignored Taiwan's early warnings on Covid, helped China lie and cover up the severity of the pandemic, helped China try and avoid responsibility for the pandemic with their silly online campaign that told people connecting the disease to China were "racist", not to mention high ranking WHO officials have literally been caught on camera pretending not to hear questions they don't want to answer on the Taiwan question and calling Taiwan part of China, and just generally praising China nonstop despite their despicable track record. Its really, really not looking good for the WHO.

This isn’t about politics though. It’s trying to help the largest worldwide health organization get money and supplies where it’s needed most. There just isn’t any other organization that could have such a large impact right now.

I feel for the people of Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet but I don;t think Gaga had ill intentions. Tedros is currently the face of the WHO and many view the WHO positively (including Gaga it seems). Do they have shady links to China? 100% yes. Is it sucky that they support China's control over all those regions? Yes. But I don't think Gaga should be called out for supporting Tedros for his efforts on handling the pandemic at the moment. Did he / the WHO drop the ball in the begining at the request of China? Yes but all Gaga is thinking of right now is about NOW and how she can help ppl NOW not what the WHO could have done better, who's to blame for this and that etc...

Personally speaking I do sometimes question a lot of Gaga's political actions, choices and who she supports and doesn't but I don't think she had ill intent and I don't think she was trying to be political by complimenting Tedros tbh. That said I can empathize and understand the upset feelings this could cause to people living in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Gaga is often seen as a beacon in many regards and to see her flash her light on an organization so hated over there would 100% be disappointing for some. I'm not going to sit here and shame their disappointment.

Poor girl really can't catch a break:saladga:

What is she supposed to do? Make it political when the event is created to celebrate the all medical workers and all others fighting in the front line?

Dreams of you and me are in the dirt.

It's Apple Daily. They have an extreme anti-China stance and are hypercritical of stuff like this. To be clear, I am pro-Taiwan independence (even if only a few small countries acknowledge that Taiwan is a country, it's a freaking country, and it's done the best job of any country in the world of managing the pandemic), and I support the HK protests, but I also think that the Apple Daily is making a mountain out of a molehill with regards to Gaga. It's as silly as the CCP finding  fault with her for meeting with the Dalai Lama.

To be perfectly frank, I don't think Gaga is well-versed enough in East Asian geopolitics to realize the complicated history of the region, and as for the WHO, in spite of the things they screwed up toward the beginning, and in spite of the problems with the organization in general, we are in the midst of a global pandemic, and they are a global health organization, so I can understand her wanting to work with them and to credit the director, no matter how problematic his actions have been.

And no one in HK whom I know is cancelling her over this. Some of my HK friends streamed the concert and are praising her. Also, Cantopop stars like Eason Chan and Jacky Cheung were included in the pre-show, which made a lot of people happy. Besides, politically minded Hongkongers have bigger issues to pay attention to, like the recent arrests of pro-democracy activists.
