It is very clearly the way this ridiculous "streaming era" works and will continue to so long as fans are obsessed with a chart system that is broken and rewards frontloaded releases from artists with the largest fanbases. 1. The Weeknd sacrificed "Heartless" for "Blinding Lights," and easily could've come out with 2 losers. The hype of his comeback had Heartless debut #1 before it plummeted (HARD pre-album drop). Blinding Lights barely got to the #1 and could've been stuck in the bottom half of the Top 10 between 'The Box' and 'Say So' / collabs eras. Despite having what many say is the AOTY, Heartless was a non-starter, and he hasn't yet gotten a 3rd hit. 2. Dua Lipa sacrificed "Physical" for "Don't Start Now" and in order to maintain enough momentum for Future Nostalgia to do well with a cute 3rd single "Break My Heart." DSN took FOREVER to get Top 5, and despite neither of her followups making Top 20, FN is somehow a flawless era the likes of which Gaga can only hope to achieve? Physical was hyped and had 0 impact, while BMH/her entire discography benefitted from the album release. 3. Selena Gomez sacrificed "Look at Her Now" for "Lose You to Love Me" and again, grabbed a #1 out of the latter before it sunk. Combined, they were enough for Rare to come out to moderate success and "Rare" to be 'meh.' 4. Justin Bieber sacrificed "Yummy" for "Intentions" but the results have been interesting; not sure what the original plan was, but Intentions clearly has had more longevity and acclaim. That a fanbase streaming deep cuts of an album plays the most important role in determining a Chart that is aimed at objectively measuring the impact of singles in the mainstream is so.. wrong. I respect the Chart climb of DSN because its success across metrics over time is exactly how music should be quantified in terms of impact. It'll be fun to see what happens in terms of sentiment if Stupid Love reaches Top 10 on album week a la Heartless and then lingers in the Hot 100 for more than 14 weeks total.
