Lady Gaga gets so much praise that you kind of hate to dump any more on her, but besides whatever involvement she had in curating the show, her bookending appearances here were something else she got right. She opened the show alone with Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile,” a song that can be played a little maudlin — but, yes, we all get the “though your heart is breaking” part, so she had fun with it as somebody swooped around her piano with a smartphone. (On her music stand, she had some kind of doodling instead of sheet music.) At the end of the tune, she put her finger to the corner of her mouth and flicked it, as if to send her smile out to the audience, as she hit a final high key on the piano. Was this any time to be cute? Apparently, and it worked just fine. As did the solemnity she inevitably struck on the other end of the two hours, joining up with Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli on their famous duet of “The Prayer” and turning it into a four-parter with John Legend (or five, counting accompanist Lang Lang).

The Independent

Just as coronavirus is an unprecedented challenge for our generation, One World was an unprecedented cultural and technological event, as historic, perhaps, as The Beatles playing “All You Need Is Love” via satellite in 1967. An eight-hour rag bag of brilliance, boredom and buffoonery it may have been musically, but its triumph was in the connections and creativity still possible in the most dislocated of times, of technology and humanity combining to overcome. It’s unlikely we’ll see its like again this pandemic, but the precedent is set for our musical exit strategy. Once the lockdown lifts, nothing less than the biggest gig of all time will do.

I like how they could present so many ideas in one sentence. I'm praising, criticising, hating, admiring in one damn sentence. The author is truly every icon.

Lady Gaga reminded the world to “Smile"

Introduced as “the woman who put this entire evening together,” Gaga opened the show by extending thanks to healthcare workers on the front lines, to Global Citizen and WHO, and with a message for viewers at home.

“What I’d like to do tonight, if I can, is just give you the permission to, for a moment, ‘Smile,’" she said as she began singing and striking the chords of “Smile” on her keyboard. Gaga assisted in securing the night’s stacked lineup, according to event organizers.

Well if you have seen the ‘Gaga China’ threads lately, you’ll know why Gaga will never achieve that kind of success in China :madge:

Marie Claire: Lady Gaga's Performances During "One World" Are Drawing Rave Reviews

My jaw is still on the floor from Lady Gaga's performances at One World: Together at Home, and the Internet totally agrees. After organizing the whole damn thing and then killing two (two!) performances, we can all agree the woman deserves some major applause. Honestly, you have to hand it to Lady Gaga for bringing all these amazing artists together, from John Legend to Jennifer Lopez, while we're a month deep doing what we do best: self-isolating and also tweeting about how amazing this woman is.

Since she was the brilliant mastermind behind this free at-home concert, it's safe to say she had one of the best performances of the evening. Yes, I'm still in mourning that her new album Chromatica is delayed indefinitely, but this made up for it.
