Margot Robbie appeared on the “Talking Pictures” podcast and expressed her continued bafflement over moviegoers hating “Babylon,” her infamous 2022 box office flop co-starring Brad Pitt. Directed by “La La Land” Oscar winner Damian Chazelle, the Hollywood epic centered on silent movie stars in the 1920s as they struggle to adapt during the industry’s transition to talkies. “Babylon” was made for a budget in the $80 million range but bombed with $15 million at the domestic box office and $63 million worldwide.

“I am still saying that,” Robbie said when podcast host Ben Mankiewicz expressed confusion over people not liking “Babylon.” “I love it. I don’t get it either. I know I am biased because I am very close to the project and I obviously believe in it, but I still can’t figure out why people hated it. I wonder if in 20 years people are going to be like, ‘Wait, “Babylon” didn’t do well at the time?’ Like when you hear that ‘Shawshank Redemption’ was a failure at the time and you’re like like, ‘How is that possible?'” source

Thiss, i wanted to be blown away like with Joker 1, thinking it would be polarising in a good way, JFAD was so boring and bleak.

Lol I meant I loved JFAD 😅 was saying that cause of everyone hated it, and I loved it, then maybe Babylon is worth giving a 2nd chance.

But that I really hated Babylon and wanted to give up after 5 mins.

I've been saying this for a while about Joker 2. There's so many amazing films that were critically panned at the time of their release. I think it was a demographic thing. No incel superhero fan is gonna sit through a musical, no musical fan is gonna sit through a superhero movie. I don't know who the target audience was. It was a lot more artsy. It was enough of a risk to have the story go the way it went without also taking the added risk of making it a musical.

Honestly I think the issue was it didn’t feel essential or distinct. A 20s movie about debauchery? How original.

and it probably was an original movie! But premise wise it sounds very done. Singin’ in the Rain had the same base concept. 20s was on its way out in zeitgeist by this point. It just missed its moment and came out when no one was hitting theaters. It’s not a Christmas movie yet came out then. These things have literally nothing to do with the movie itself lmao

I too am surprised. Its budget was insane and it showed the dark side of Hollywood. Maybe Hollywood sabotaged it on purpose because of that?

maybe but the Babylon billboard was up at Hollywood and Highland (HUGE intersection in hollywood) for like a year or more lol

It was the opposite for me, I really enjoyed the utter chaos of Babylon as it perfectly encapsulated both the era and psychology of what probably goes on in the mind of the people in Hollywood.
