Mr S 8,673
The majority of Gaga's discography is something that has no regard to what's popular (Pokerface, Shallow, Applause) or something that follows her formula she herself created (Judas, Born This Way). Despite her hits and misses she has never really been one to follow trends and make a hit that sounds like everything else. Generic hits are not necessarily a bad thing. While you don't want your whole career to be trend following, to be a viable pop star you have to keep cranking out hits and following the trend is the way to do that. Does Gaga know how to follow the trend? Does she know how to make a generic hit? I'm talking The Cure, Heal Me, Before I Cry, some would also say Just Dance and Stupid Love though those are arguable. dynamite 59,726
The Cure did it very well She doesn't follow the trend often enough to judge though tbh, it's not for her Like a poem said by a neydy in red
yxi 4,999
No she flops when she goes generic (The Cure, Stupid Love) and the songs are forgettable
Quartz 12,535
I mean, she's OK when she does generic. She shines when she goes full Gaga, though. I mean, come on, tell me The Cure is better than Bloody Mary. EDIT: But, arguably, Do What U Want has a generic sound as well but it's the best song on ARTPOP. So, regardless, she shines. <3 Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊
2School4Cool 6,449
I feel like a part of staying “popular” is trend-following, but at the same time, Gaga was a trend-setter, I respect that she’s never just give in to the trends. I think if Gaga wanted to make Bad Romance 2.0 she easily could, but she doesn’t want to, she does her own thing and the realm of popular music has tried to keep up with her, often times being heavily influenced by her. I’m sure she could do generic very well, but she’s better off doing what she’s always done, which is making creative music unlike anything she’s done before. Cookie Tookie 10,546
No. She’s does not do generic well. Which is why many of us want her to go back to her lyrical brilliance and take pop music in a more artistic direction.
androiduser 7,438
Not really, no... Gaga's generic songs aren't that great because they follow the already popular trend, so they offer nothing new, and they are usually matched with uninspired generic lyrics, so overall the song offers nothing exciting. bluemonkey 639
She makes generic pop well, come on she went to school for it so she can craft a song in minutes. A lot of her early songs are considered generic because it’s the sound at the time. Bad Romance is a good example of a generic song done well. Generic songs are supposed to follow trend and are not supposed to offer anything new. Most of the Max Martin songs are like that yet they are great. I just think for whatever reason, she doesn't know how to make a universal crowd pleaser.
Head Empty 25,205
To me, "generic" is an inherently negative word when it comes to describing art, because it means you're not offering anything of emotional/creative value. There's nothing for people to latch onto. So doing generic "well" is not a skill to strive for . Happiness will never last, darkness comes to kick your ass... ᵃˢˢ 🕺

And so did a lot of people because they were hits.
LadariousGarage 1
Y'all are asking if Lady Gaga is generic? out of ALL pop girls you choose Lady Gaga Lets do it baby I know the Law
Kindness Hooker 7
I think the songs you're talking about are all good. I don't really think she comes off as generic even when she's does it but I guess that's just because I like it? I feel like she adds her own "Gaga" edge to things. Whatever I'll still be bopping either way.
Chromatica Island 8,517
Let's just say she does music well in any genre she wants, ya'll will b*tch about anything and be negative towards her, I swear I feel like the only fan who cares about her music, it's sad.
