Canada Provides $2000/Month For 1/4 of Workers... Sending Provinces Cash

6 Million Canadians or about 25% of Canada's current active workforce has applied for for the $2,000/month emergency benefit that applies to those that lost work due to Covid-19

 

Canada has also announced that it will send emergency cash to Provinces to help them with their stimulus efforts that many Provinces cannot afford

 

While Canada's Federal Government is in very good financial position the same cannot be said of many Provinces that are cash strapped drowning in debt

Yet when students came to Trudeau asking for compensation because they can’t find summer jobs, “The prime minister suggested that students might want to consider spending their summer working on a farm or in a fishery.” 

Excuse me?! I’m an economics and neuroscience major and have had internships with labs, consulting companies, and the government and you want me to work on a farm?

The full stimulus package in case anyone is curious includes:

 

- relaxed EI insurance requirements to qualify

- $2000/month for those who loose jobs specifically due to Covid-19

- 75% wage subsities for affected industries up to $847/week ($3,388/month)

- increased healthcare budget for supplies and extra room

- Increased cash transfers to Provinces if their stimulus plans are in line with Federal plans

The Government can't account for every single situation or fix every single persons issue

 

They are already running a projected deficit 4X larger than the largest on record (in 2008)

I think they need to do something. Obviously, many (like myself) don’t need the income from summer jobs to fund our living expenses through the school year, but a lot do. For them, they need to save up as much as they can in those 4 months to pay for their schooling and living over the next 8 months. They have lost that chance almost completely.

I get that. What I'm saying is, it's gonna be difficult for the Government to fix every single persons issues

 

I think they are trying to prioritize

 

Jobs lost benefits are easy to verify and compensate

 

Saying you were going to get a job, the government has to take your word for it and is easy to cheat the Government and not surprised they haven't gone down this road

That's the problem with the governments measures all over the world. They make rules and restrictions for all people and fix the problems only for some. 

"Fix" - also means they simply are faster in providing the benefits people are entitled for.

The thing is even with restrictions they are already spending a fortune

 

If they just wrote set checks for every single person without trying to account for people that are actually in work-force or what they earned etc this deficit already 10% of GDP would be like quadruple what it already is

I understand why they are doing it. I'm simply pointing out that even a succes in this situation costs so much and is actually very limited in solving the effects of the measures.

And we Americans get 1200 and that's all, folks...

Granted, our unemployment has opened up quite a bit, and I am now technically making hundreds more a week on unemployment than I was at my actual job....

The difference isnt like massive... If u adjust for currency...

 

$2,000 CAN is like $1400 USD these days

 

The Canadian dollar has fallen a fair bit last few years cuz of oil prices
