Should have went as follows:

1) Scheiße

2) Born This Way

3) The Edge of Glory

4) Yoü and I

PROMO SINGLE: Judas

And das it.

Can I critique this?

1. Any lead single after TFM would've been a number 1 hit WW. So Scheiße would have done well and even be considered the 'new' BR!

2. It would've done well at first but tank afterwards, similar to Judas. And I don't think it would've been the classic gay anthem that everyone knows now if it was released as a 2nd single.

3. This song was always destined to be a hit. It would've done well. I wonder what an alternative mv would've been like...

4. It would've only done well in the U.S. but moderately to flopping in many other countries. It would have stalled the era, but because it's the last it doesn't matter!

I have a crystal clear memory that Marry the Night was supposed to be the third single. Can't tell you exactly why. But I was a major stan and would have consumed every word she said. As I recall, she said MTN was almost the first single? I swear she mentioned somewhere she planned to release it as the third single. I know she teased the instrumental in a Gagavision early on. And for some reason I remember being disappointed TEOG took it's spot. I wish I remembered better. But I am pretty confident this was true.

because the farmville thing. she last or first song was marry the night, and it fits right the time between second and possibly third single.

And Gaga was really trying to push MTN, like in the Monster Ball HBO special

Yes! It's so sad to see that Gaga really wanted MTN to smash and become recognized due to the intensive promo for the track! She really loved the song! It's a classic in our hearts anyway. But it deserved more!

I also have this memory, if I remember right, TEOG was kinda like DWUW, a promotional single that took the spot of another song. And Gaga was really trying to push MTN, like in the Monster Ball HBO special

That is my memory. She was releasing promo singles. Judas had debuted top 10 but never clicked at radio. TEOG was really popular and garnered radio play. People were reporting calling radio and requesting Judas and being told they were going to play TEOG. Then she also released Hair as a promo single. In the month between the release of Judas and TEOG I swore she said MTN was third single. But then when TEOG switch happened everything changed.

If I recall from stories she shared on LittleMonsters.com, she wanted Marry The Night, Born This Way, The Edge of Glory, and Scheisse in that order. Record label pushed for the title track as the lead single instead. They figured that because Judas had an industrial sound to it courtesy of RedOne that it would smash like Bad Romance; released Easter Weekend 2011 and went downhill from there. Single peaked at #10 on Billboard but fell right after because of the blasphemy accusations. The Edge of Glory was pushed as a bounceback from Judas. Problem was everything was competing with Adele’s 21. Record label then pushed You and I and Marry The Night. She advertised her fans better start learning German to understand the next single. It was supposed to be Scheisse then Heavy Metal Lover next. Marry The Night didn’t go anywhere, so future singles were stopped.

I remember that scandal where people called in to request Judas and stations were saying they weren’t playing that.

Yes! I've read about something like that. They maybe thought Judas would smash and the single following it would be Marry The Night 3-4 months later.

does anyone still have that tweet or quote that Gaga made after BTW (the single) came out and promised that the second single would be even better? There were some discussions in the GP that BTW wasn't that strong, so she promised a better second single

She said something along the lines of the 2nd singles always being the best track on the album. That's what I recall. Though I don't think Judas is the best track on BTW. That either goes to TEOG or MTN.

Red Velvet

It was BTW, MTN, TEOG and Scheiße then I think Y&I was placed near TEOG.

This is unrealistic though. If the era had gone very well then ok, it could've been possible. But it's not the 80s when 6 singles could get released and still get radio play. I think 4 singles were intended and if that went well then more could've been released. I just find it strange how Judas and You And I were singles. They were pretty messy.

To be fair, it worked for Katy Perry. Lol.

And I don't understand why Judas didn't do so well. Judas was such a good song. It had all the makings of a hit - like it very much was Bad Romance 2.0. I feel like most people didn't like it because of the religious imagery / references, when there was a lot more under the surface to explore.

I will always say Judas is incredibly underrated.

Smother Em Eh

This Era was so magical and it would have been so interesting to see how it would go if the singles were released that Gaga originally wanted.

It is a great dance-pop track but I think one of the reasons it didn't do well is that it came off the BTW's single controversy and its abrasive sound. People probably thought she was out of ideas, releasing gimmicky song after gimmicky song. She tried to 'shock' but people were criticising her more during that time, especially after BTW single. It was also very abrasive sound and felt like a rush.

I still think Judas was a horrible idea :huntyga: It’s a great song but not for the radio. People don’t listen and say “this must mean something else”. They just listen to what you give them, if they find it inappropriate they will not play it.
