Bill O’Reilly: Those Dying From Coronavirus ‘Were on Their Last Legs Anyway’

Disgraced former Fox News star Bill O’Reillyshrugged off the growing death toll from the coronavirus pandemic on Wednesday, callously claiming that projected deaths from the virus will be low because those who are currently dying “were on their last legs anyway.”

During a segment on O’Reilly’s former Fox News colleague Sean Hannity’s radio show, Hannity wondered aloud when American life would snap back to normalcy. In recent days, Hannity has focused much of his airtime on calling for a quick reversal of social distancing guidelines in order to restart the American economy.

“I want life back to normal, can you fix that in a simple way?” Hannity quipped.

“Oh man I wish I could, you know?” O’Reilly responded before assuring Hannity that it would happen sooner rather than later.

Claiming that it was “really good for everybody” that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) dropped out of the presidential race—he later suggested it was due to Sanders’ health-care policies—O’Reilly then went on to doubt the virus’ lethality.

“The projections that you just mentioned are down to 60,000,” he said, citing a recent model on projected American deaths through August. “I don't think it will be that high.”

“13,000 dead now in the USA,” he continued. “Many people who are dying, both here and around the world, were on their last legs anyway, and I don't want to sound callous about that.”

Sensing that O’Reilly’s comments would draw immediate outrage, Hannity interjected and let O’Reilly know that he’s “going to get hammered for that.”

“Well, I don't care,” the one-time O’Reilly Factor host fired back. “I mean, a simple man tells the truth.”

Hannity and O’Reilly would then point to the relatively high mortality rates from the virus in Italy and Spain, citing socialized medicine, Europeans’ smoking habits, and the countries’ older populations as reasons so many have succumbed there.

O’Reilly, meanwhile, ended the discussion by predicting that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will say that a large percentage of “people who died from the virus, also had other things that killed them.”

The ex-Fox star’s comment echoes those of other right-wing personalities recently who have questioned the death count. Fox News senior analyst Brit Hume, for instance, has repeatedly asserted that the American death toll—which currently stands at over 14,000—is inflated because anyone who dies after contracting COVID-19 is being counted.

Dr. Deborah Birx, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, rejected Hume’s argument that coronavirus deaths are being exaggerated due to pre-existing conditions and other causes during the daily coronavirus briefing.

“Those individuals will have an underlying condition, but that underlying condition did not cause their acute death when it’s related to a Covid infection,” she said Wednesday. “In fact, it’s the opposite.”

Top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, meanwhile, was far more blunt.

“You will always have conspiracy theories when you have a very challenging public health crisis. They are nothing but distractions,” he declared at the briefing.

UPDATEBill O’Reilly Defends Comments About Coronavirus: ‘Far-Left’ Wants to ‘Punish’ Me

Former Fox News personality Bill O’Reilly defended himself Thursday morning after trending overnight for comments he made Wednesday about people who’ve died of coronavirus being “on their last legs.” He later addresses his critics, saying that people providing “perspective” are punished by the “far left.”

During a conversation on one-time colleague Sean Hannity’s radio show, O’Reilly mused on when Americans could expect to get back to their normal lives after this pandemic: “We’re making little steps. Bernie Sanders, you know, he’s gone. That’s really good for everybody. The projections that you just mentioned are down to 60,000. I don’t think it will be that high. 13,000 dead now in the USA. Many people who are dying, both here and around the world, were on their last legs anyway.”

He added he didn’t “want to sound callous about that.”

Hannity warned him then that O’Reilly’s ideas wouldn’t be well-received, saying he would get “hammered” — and he did.

Several people called the 70-year-old former primetime star a “ghoul” over his comments, often including profanity.

“I was going to make a Bill O’Reilly joke but Bill O’Reilly is a joke,” tweeted the account of Bill Palmer’s political blog, Palmer Report.

Bishop Talbert Swan really took aim at O’Reilly, writing that his comments made him “cow manure.”

“In my circle, we’ve lost people to #COVID19 in their 70’s & 80’s, but as low as their 30’s,” he added. “I prayed with a 20 yr old who tested positive.”

Thursday morning, O’Reilly defended himself, writing, “The pandemic is extremely deadly but not the Black Plague. Far-left wants chaos and carnage so President Trump will lose re-election. They are not interested in facts and will try to punish people who provide perspective.”

:saladga:

So the healthy young people dying were on their last legs? Senior citizens (who are his ****ing age) who probably had another solid 20 years at least were on their last legs?

No one likes quarantine, but don’t be selfish and ridiculous, this is for everyone’s own good.

The point about death toll vs death rate is well taken. Does it not make sense that a country with more people would have more deaths? Death rate wise America is well ahead of Europe, even if the mainstream media won't advertise that (we all know why.) America's response has been imperfect for sure, but compared to many other countries it has been more effective.

what a silly comparison. cancer is a well documented disease. covid-19 is months old and not even expert virologists have many different views on how it spreads/how it affects the human body/the mortality rate/how to combat it.

i think this speaks magnitudes to your character. You constantly tear down those who's views are not as liberal as yours. Being conservative is not a weakness, nor is being republican something to pity. You patronize those for holding more traditional views than you, because you believe that they are the ones "holding back society". Yet your lack of acceptance is just as dangerous. You brush aside those you do not agree with without providing any kind of counter point.

You cannot have a productive debate or try to make your community work if you look down upon those who have different views.

I am neither of those things and I have no clue as to where you got that impression. Nor do I appreciate the accusation.

The only 'silly' thing is your constant, dangerous down playing of the virus. Please listen to the advice provided by qualified health professionals so that you don't (unknowingly) kill someone. I hope people who read your posts don't think it's okay to ignore such advice/become complacent.
