Daylight Jokers 14,958
If she released it in the 80's, I guess it's pretty generic since SL's production is the sound of that decade (except the bassline). But in today's music climate, it sounds fairly fresh. The lyrics tho...they don't feel quite inspired tbqh. It's like she had an idea of where she wanted the song to go but she didn't explore its full potential that's why it's a little vague on some parts. There's already a concept in the lines, 'Nobody's gonna heal me if I don't open the door' and 'Now it's time to free me from the shame' (no man's an island and letting people into your life will help you grow as a person). I still love the song nonetheless.

I'm not dragging it. I like telephone and find it a real bop. I don't consider basic and generic to be a bad thing necessairily like many here do Something can be basic and catchy good work and something can be unique but not necessarily well done (in my opinion, art is subjective) My point was just that unless something is basic and generic to the max, many here don't wanna attach that label to Gaga and try to find a reason to say it's not generic... But for other artists the standards are biasely set higher and unless it's something totally innovative many here automatically attach the generic label
Animal Claws 18,665
Guys, you're misinterpreting. The song is not generic. The generic term means something that follows trends, for example, if Stupid Love was a sound that was on the radio (like trap), that would be generic, cause it's a sound that almost everyone is doing rn. I don't think its basic either. Its not the most lavish thing out there, but its certainly not basic. Lyrically its not that deep and thats fine, but its certainly not lazy either. The structure of the song and what its meant to be suits the lyrics perfectly, and works well with the instrumental. What I mean by that is that the song allows Gaga to do her thing in the verses and pre-chorus, and Gaga allows the song or instrumental to do its thing in the chorus Rather than having a song like "Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish where the song is completely carried by its instrumental, or Shallow where the song is completely carried by the vocals and lyrics, Stupid Love is a song which relies on both the vocals/lyrics to have a moment, and then the instrumental to have a moment. Its the first Gaga song to actually do that. Plus, the nature of this song is a happy dance record with house and disco influences in it. A common theme in dance/house music is a very strong instrumental and very little lyrical content especially in the chorus. Its supposed to be light hearted and fun, and thats exactly what it achieves to do. So I don't find it basic, or lazy at all. End Racism Now

I often feel like some music others call "basic" is actually REALLY good, and the stuff people make where it's VERY experimental that everyone else praise is just not for me, I don't find a lot of that stuff catchy or good to listen to BUT that's just my musical taste

Modern Ecstasy2 2,202
It’s weak lyrically and not groundbreaking - but not all music needs to be. A fun dance bop though. “Delete this thread that person is not Gaga he is a hot blonde twink”
