Scientists have found evidence that Earth was covered by a global ocean that turned the planet into a “water world” more than 3bn years ago.

Telltale chemical signatures were spotted in an ancient chunk of ocean crust which point to a planet once devoid of continents, the largest landmasses on Earth.

If the findings are confirmed by future work, they will help researchers to refine their theories on where and how the first single-celled life emerged on Earth, and what other worlds may be habitable.

“An early Earth without emergent continents may have resembled a ‘water world’, providing an important environmental constraint on the origin and evolution of life on Earth, as well as its possible existence elsewhere,” the scientists write in Nature Geoscience.

“I imagine a picture kind of like what it must look like to approach the Galápagos Islands from the west: vast expanses of ocean waters to the north and south with small volcanic rocky islets barely poking above the ocean surface,” said Wing.

This all makes me feel like Atlantis was truly plunged into the sea, especially if we add how scientists last year acquired bones/fossil evidence to prove that we’ve been missed 50,000-150,000 years of our human history & existence.

So there’s a possibility that all the earth came from volcanic eruptions (?) that’s very interesting 

I really believe this theory that Earth ages are cyclical, so perhaps the planet is slowly coming back to a “water” age well despite the obvious proof that humans have been a major factor to sea level rise

But we avoid bringing up religion on GGD. It's gets messy in no time

Mmm. Not from my recollection?

If you're talking about the Great Flood that's mentioned in most European and west Asian religious and some African, that's because an actual flood did happen and it was quite destructive. 

But most religions I remember, have creation myths that start at nothing or close to nothing. 

I think only some Native American tribes and African religions have the world starting from water.

MANY religious texts talk about waters of the deep when talking about the beginning from Abrahamic faiths to Eastern religions. 

The great flood is AFTER creation.

I'm just saying religion is not very well tolerated on GGD and ppl love to generalize and hate throwing it all in the same group

I was always taught the continents pushed themselves up towards eachother and after million of years, they were finally stable enough to "float" on, well, the mantle of the earth

This is talking about 3 billion years, much before the first animals or plants ever existed. By the time humans came to be the world's continents and seas were mostly like they are today, especially by the time human civilizations started. This has nothing to do with Atlantis
