Covid-19 survivors blood contains little to no antibodies

Researchers in Shanghai hope to determine whether some recovered coronavirus patients have a higher risk of reinfection after finding surprisingly low levels of Covid-19 antibodies in a number of people discharged from hospital.

A team from Fudan University analysed blood samples from 175 patients discharged from the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Centre and found that nearly a third had unexpectedly low levels of antibodies.

In some cases, antibodies could not be detected at all.

This could mean that immunization after surving covid-19 is not initially given for about a third of all survivors and that re-infections could be very likely.

I don't study infectious diseases so I'm not well versed. But is it ALWAYS a one to one thing where if you're exposed, you necessarily generate antibodies for it? I know that's the case for vaccines and all, but is it the norm?

Infections come is so many forms and are caused by so many microbes (viruses, bacterias, fungi). It depends on particular the infection if you generate antibodies.

Having the common flu doesn't make you immune to future infections, for instance.

i feel like nobody’s talking about reinfections 

I mean I would assume reinfections will be rare but it’s gonna happen 

However, this all begs the question if she was actually reinfected, or if she was never "cured" in the first place. I skimmed the article and it just said she made a "full recovery." Was she retested, or was she just asymptomatic?

LA JOLLA, CA — An antibody recovered from a survivor of the SARS epidemic in the early 2000s has revealed a potential vulnerability of the new coronavirus at the root of COVID-19, according to a study from scientists at Scripps Research.

The study, published today in Science, is the first to map a human antibody’s interaction with the new coronavirus at near-atomic-scale resolution. Although the antibody was produced in response to an infection of SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), which is caused by the SARS-CoV virus, it cross-reacts with the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2.

The structural mapping revealed a nearly identical site on both coronaviruses to which the antibody binds, suggesting a functionally important and vulnerable site for this family of coronaviruses.

That's because the future strains of flu are different and mutated. Your body still contains the antibodies for the particular virus that you got the flu from.

If this is the case then a "normal" vaccine wouldn't work would it? Isn't that the idea of the vaccine to create antibodies?

Well that's cuz flu is always mutating therefore a new flu vaccine is developed once/twice a year. 

The main reason why viral Acute Respiratory Syndromes do not generate that much antibodies is because the syndrome is caused by the choke of leucocytes that stumble bronchioles and alveoli damaging your lungs, not viruses themselves. In mild "flu-like" cases, more antibodies are developed as the organism has recognized the virus before it stimulated leucocytes overrun in the respiratory system. :oops:

Ok, I'm not expert on this, so please help me out if I misunderstood: I guess you could say that the more aggresive your case of covid-19 is, the less likely you could be to properly produce anti-bodies against it?

they need to investigate  the correlation between severe cases and lack of antibodies then...
