Coding and algorithms and all of that are used extensively in scientific/medical research

As @blankpaper said software development and mathematics often go hand in hand in biomedical research. One such example is mHealth (mobile health) where you could theoretically have an app that tracks your vitals, body temp, etc, and could identify abnormalities indicating you are sick before you have noticeable symptoms. 
There are also a ton of people making apps for hospitals that can predict disease trajectories or make it easier for doctors to track their patients labs, not to mention all of the people doing AI. I think it's super interesting, but I'm biased because I do this type of research.
