FfFfFfFF 58,413
The dramatic quietening of towns and cities in lockdown Britain has changed the way the Earth moves beneath our feet, scientists say. Seismologists at the British Geological Survey have found that their sensors are twitching less now that human activity has been curtailed, leading to a drop in the anthropogenic din that vibrates through the planet. The fall in the human hum that rings around the world means that, in theory at least, the scientists should be able to detect smaller earthquakes in the UK, and more distant tremors in Europe and in countries further afield than their equipment usually allows. The UK’s network of sensitive instruments picked up markedly fewer vibrations last week as the coronavirus lockdown took hold, the researchers found. “We had a look at the data from some of our seismic stations around the UK and we do see an effect,” said Baptie. At some sensors, cultural noise is running at five decibels lower than normal, about a quarter down on usual readings. Similar falls have been spotted by Belgian seismologists based in Brussels. gagzus 23,610
My friend was saying the other day that she thinks the whole world should have one month where we’re all forced into quarantine every year, so it would help improve climate change and what not. And tbh I kinda agree with her. Like it’s random and small but it’s as if the weather/season is resetting itself here in the UK during the lockdown
Francesca Cipriani 1,668
It's crazy how this lockdown is positively affecting the world in such a short time. Less pollution, less vibrations, more animals around. We should really change our lifestyle, and the positive side of the virus is that it is forcing us to do it imagine how the world will be if this lockdown continues for months

This is just one example of how unrealistic so many ppl are on GGD with policy. We don't live in a dream world. Things that might sound cooler or good on the surface are not that simple. Of course shutting down each country for a month every year isn’t realistic, and it would most likely get shot down in any form of government as soon as it’s said, but if the governments planned for it rather than it just happen abruptly without any thought, maybe something might be able to work. I’m conclusion, throwing down someone’s idea and telling them they’re stupid destroys imagination and thought processes, it’s not good.

I do like to hear other ppls ideas but a shutdown every year is such a far fetched idea (even if it's planned) that I don't even remotely see how this is gonna happen All this money were fighting for to tax the rich more to pay for benefits would go down the drain just to sustain shutdown economies It's just not an effective way The amount of lost output, for half that cost u could achieve more against the fight on climate change An entire months economic output would finish paying for all electric switch to green energy. No more coal or natural gas power plants These things would be an investment. A shutdown is not an investment to fix any root problem. You just pollute a lot less for 1 month out of 12. It's not worth it

RAMROD 117,348
That is cool and all but enjoy it while it last, cos after all this over, things will go back to where it was, or got even worse because people may think they need to do things twice as hard to get back all the losses they suffer during the quarantine. You just pollute a lot less for 1 month out of 12. It's not worth it I agree it’s not a realistic option, but at least it’s a thought and an idea to trying to be more green. And I agree, it’d be basically worthless for 1 of 12 months to shut down because that’s only about 8% (if my math isn’t total sh*t) of the year’s emissions. But this unplanned shut down can help scientists and politicians understand what is more efficient in trying to be green, because spending trillions of dollars to switch directly to green energy isn’t idealistic either only because you have to think of the conservative states that would be hard pressed to go completely green. It’s all about bringing in different ideas and discussions that will help us get to where we want to be, in regards to being green, but with so many different regulations and policies in place everything is basically just ideas and it’s very hard to switch solely to green energy or intentionally shut down governments for a month.
