64% Death Rate In Sweden's "Closed" Cases Of Covid-19

Of the 563 finished confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Sweden, 358 or 64% resulted in death

It is worth noting that more severe cases are more likely to get confirmed in the first place. Also with such a small number of closed cases aberations can have wild swings in numbers (such as if many of the outbreaks were outbreaks in a retirement or nursing home for example)

Nevertheless the death rate is staggering

The overall death rate counting non resolved cases is 8% about as bad as Italy

I've been watching some areas closely, and the death rate starting high isn't unusual and usually tappers down when a larger number of cases come in.   What really gets me is the recovery:death rate ratio worldwide, because that's what really matters to me... the number of cases is second.

edit: I wish news stations would talk about recoveries as well.  That matters too.  There's more to than "over a million cases" worldwide.  It doesn't really paint the whole picture of how many ACTIVE cases there are.  Such a huge missing piece that pisses me off a little.

edit 2 hijacking the top post: I think looking at one point percentages is a misleading thing (nothing against anybody) - especially during the beginning.  We need to look for trends over time and see the death rate decreasing, increasing, or steadying.  The death:closed case (i.e. recovered + death) ratio was about 50% here in the United States about a week ago, but now it's 38%

Yeah. I can think of two reasons why it can start high

#1 many countries take time to start ranking up testing when their infections start so the most severe cases are the ones caught and most mild will be missed so that already inflated the numbers

#2 if a lot of the first major cases just happen to outbreak in populations that are more vulnerable like a nursing home that too could make the numbers really high

So I'm sure the rate will drop considerably but even so this is low-key shoking. Out of 6000 cases overall that's still 8%

So even if u add a greater number of cases to smooth out a small sample of closed cases it's still high

This means there are thousands and thousands of infected.

Luxembourg has 2 200 cases and 31 deaths. Highest testing rate in the world. So numbers are closer to these.

I read somewhere around 14% of Spain's population is infected. 0.7% of Germany. 5% of Italy. 3% of France...

How many of those are closed?

I'm assuming that's true... I don't know much about Sweden's politics.  It's sorta like "sick bias" (creating my own term).  US kinda started similar back in the beginning of March from your post, plus the majority of Sweden's cases happened ~3 weeks ago.  People need a little more time to recover.   I'm certain the death % will be much lower in the next two weeks.

Chic

The world isn't testing people who don't have severe symptoms.

That's like saying 64% of gay people have AIDS but they only test gay people who have severe symptoms associated with AIDS

Absolutely no point to this kind of statistic besides fearmongering

We're in an election year here in the U.S... why can't we get the people who do polling to do a "random sample" of like 3-10k people to get a truly good estimate of the infected?  I understand I just said "3-10k tests", but I feel this would be for an important purpose...

Exactly this. Fatalities tend to happen within the 14 days for the symptomatic ones meanwhile recovery rate or total suppression of the virus happens much longer than that (I assume 2+ weeks). In the long run, recovery rate will steeply increase. Another factor is the availability of anti-viral drugs. In some countries like Thailand and Japan, they have experimented on using "existing" drugs to treat the infected patients. They call it drug re-purposing, for example: Remdesivir (Ebola) and Japan's Avigan (flu anti-viral drug)or the Hydroxychloroquine (Mallaria).
