Yes, for about two weeks now, and according to the media people have been respecting it. So this might be a sign that social distancing is working. But because of this, the peak of the disease will only happen in May. So, we should keep social distance until then. I wonder if that will happen. For a poor country in Europe, with a troubled healthcare system, this is really great news. Hopefully we will avoid a nightmare like Spain’s or Italy’s. tomsches 17,553
Spain & Austria's numbers have been declining the last 3 days too! I'm Austrian but I live in Spain so those are the 2 countries I'm following closely.

I know there's restrictions like closed bars and clubs and most beaches are closed too and hospitals are under lockdown (that's why my family can't see my aunt in hospital) and schools are closed I'm not sure how severe the lockdown is in the general economy like if all non-essential businesses are closed or not But they do have a lot of restrictions that I know

That's a good sign then, yesterday marked 2 weeks since quarantine started in France and the number of new cases is going down too, that's a clear sign that social distancing really works. But why will the disease peak in May ? I think it should peak around the end of the second week of quarantine, which is already done for Portugal then, right ? Portugal is not poor. The quality of life there measured by UN index categorizes Portugal as developed and high quality of life But it's poor compared to the average developed nation like Canada & USA in North America, Japan, Australia/New Zealand and much of Northern Europe or even Central Europe like France But in global terms it's easily in the top 25% quartile or at the very least top 1/3 i guess u could say it's among the bottom of the top lol

It's just because we have incredibly nice weather, a beautiful country, and no paparazzi. And the capital is an old city not as crowded as other European capitals. And if you have just a few millions you can easily find a nice house.

I think it should peak around the end of the second week of quarantine, which is already done for Portugal then, right ? Because we are still expecting lots of people to get infected. The virus is out there and social distancing doesn't allow people to get immune to it, so actually it spreads the disease in time. The only cure so far, since there is no vaccine, is to create herd immunity. A large amount of people need to get infected, and therefore immune, to actually stop the disease from spreading. The social distancing is most importantly to avoid a rapid increase of cases. A slow increase of sick people allows the healthcare system to adapt and admit every patient as they come. If you get everyone infected at the same time, you just can't take care of them all because the system is not prepared for such an avalanche. Social distancing creates a plateau: more or less the same people will get infected, but not all at the same time. Small fractions, but for more weeks. Specially if someone can find a cure in the mean time. This way we control the situation without our national health system collapsing. Spain it's reaching the peak much faster and they already anounced the colpase of the health system. Meaning: people are going to die. The National Health System in Portugal while being "poor" moneywise It's deemed one one of the best in the world. You only need insurance if you want. You can get the basic in the national health system by free or a very small fee that can go from 4 euros to 18 euros. Even if you can pay at the time you can pay latter (they wont even call you asking for the money. You can go monts without paying. Ofc, if It's big money things may change. But they rarely will ask you to pay the fee for a quick check in. The government declared Emergency State One week ago but we already were asked to stay home. Public services were shutdown (those who are not mandatory ofc). Companies are still working but they need to keep everyone 2 meters apart and create space for isolation room. We can walk alone or with someone else. Groups larger than two are not permitted. In the supermarkets only are accepted a few number of people at once. You cant go with your wife for example. Risk groups have their own schedule to shop. Older people and doctors for example. Basically... it's just that. you can still go outside and catch some air. But Parks, cinemas, bars etc... are all closed. Restaurants can be open if they have take away
TheSlash 14,539
This is great news . Here in Germany, the numbers of infections still rise, but so is the number of healed people. While the death rate remains at around 0.9%, the healing rate is already at around 17.6%, with 64,108 total cases, 571 deaths and 11,279 healed people . According to the app I use the number of total cases only increased by 1,735 cases, while the last days it was always over 4,000. We may slowly have hope to reach the peak of the pandemic in the coming weeks. Ew, David!

Social distancing creates a plateau: more or less the same people will get infected, but not all at the same time. Small fractions, but for more weeks. Genuine question tho. They talk about flattening the curve but... Are they even allowing the curve to start? Because unless the percentage of confirmed cases is a very small fraction of the people who actually get it, even if the true number of cases is 5X what they confirm... We're still looking at an extremely small percentage of the population getting infected How do u even flatten the curve if u start lockdowns everytime there's 200 cases? At this rate in a year only like 10% of the population would have gotten it... To me it doesn't sound like flattening a curve it sounds like not letting it start at all and trying to keep the cases near 0 until a vaccine comes out In which case we're gonna have to keep going under lockdowns cuz even 1 infected person in no time starts another wave the moment lockdowns end and we're gonna have constant on and off outbreaks that heard immunity will not happen if we're only allowing a few thousand a month. if that's the goal fine but they shouldnt call it flattening the curve cuz from my understanding of what flattening the curve is supposed to be, it doesn't sound like that's what we're actually doing
