Werk 13,166
I would appreciate it if someone in the comments explains it better however from what I've heard, Congress is trying to rid of encryption which protects our privacy and getting rid of it is a threat to our liberties. Basically they can listen or see your communication including WhatsApp and iMessage. They're trying to sneak this in while everyone is worrying abut COVID-19 Also sorry for the title, thought this might need attention "There’s a new bill in the works to fight against child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and other risky services on the internet — but it could come at a cost to online privacy." "Eliminating Abusive or Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technologies (EARN IT) was proposed by the Senate Judiciary Committee and sponsored by senators from both sides of the aisle such as Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). The bill is also supported by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation. " "However, this bill is problematic for both freedom of speech and privacy online according to Riana Pfefferkorn, associate director of Surveillance and Cybersecurity at the Center for Internet and Society. “This bill is trying to convert your anger at Big Tech into law enforcement’s long-desired dream of banning strong encryption,” argued Pfefferkorn in a blog post. Pfefferkorn’s detailed explanation says EARN IT appears less like a legitimate way to prevent the spread of child exploitation content and more like a covert attempt to ban end-to-end encryption, without having to ban it outright." “We’re concerned the EARN IT Act may be used to roll back encryption, which protects everyone’s safety from hackers and criminals, and may limit the ability of American companies to provide the private and secure services that people expect,” https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/earn-it-the-us-anti-encryption-bill-that-threatens-private-speech-online https://www.forbes.com/sites/zakdoffman/2020/03/14/new-warning-issued-for-all-whatsapp-and-imessage-users-major-threat-to-encryption/#4e44aa4c53f5 https://tech.newstatesman.com/security/earn-it-us-bill-end-encryption https://www.theverge.com/interface/2020/3/12/21174815/earn-it-act-encryption-killer-lindsay-graham-match-group

CautiousLurker 19,709
Ughhhhh, this has f*ckall to do with child p*rn - they always frame it as 'they're fighting child p*rnography', yet they've never succeeded, meanwhile general population has been miles better at finding and shutting distributors of child p*rnography down, at least online... This has nothing to do with fighting illegal stuff being done online - idk what the end goal is, but I can definitely see how this could be easily abused... It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!
Seeka 12,372
Doesn't the government employ the best hackers for this reason? I don't think they're going to find pedophiles and other awful people by combing through Gmail. But it's probably gonna pass because no one has eyes on this. HorusRa2 5,005
Y’all won’t be singing the same tune when we descend further and further into a surveillance state and from oligarchy to fascism. It’s surely on its way.
