In the same way we can be ordered to stay home, we could also be ordered to return to work in order to fix the economy. Ultimately saying: old people and those susceptible to covid, you're no longer the priority. The economy is. I'm shook It's not that easy Ppl can't be ordered to simply return if the job or business is gone... If ppls finances are damaged demand will also be lower when this ends U don't just return and economy fixed. It will be tougher than that
Gagaism 12,481
If governments really wanted a “great world” to live, the right thing necessary to be done since the beginning was the union on all of them to invest in studies and researchers about the virus at the first times of the outbreak. I mean, it’s easier to not make a quarantine necessary when u know how a virus or bacteria really works. The quarantine is going to be really bad for the economy, but just imagine now that we’re still getting the peak of infection in many countries (and yet with lots of people minimizing an organism the we don’t even know enough about) at the same time that other countries are considering the pandemic done and going back to activities... I mean, after all it’s even worse to think on getting in a second quarantine instead of just one. In parallel, the only thing we’re seeing about governments (the entire globe) is opinion divergences, power fighting and lost leaders in their actions while thousands of people are dying in a broken healthy systems. The world is more interconnected now than ever before. That means outbreaks very often WILL be global not local We don’t have to if we build an economy that can be agile enough to accommodate pandemics. The big problem is that we don’t have an economy designed for that and that is what made things so bad. That, plus incompetent government officials not addressing it as a real and genuine problem sooner.

ProdigyARTPOP 3,910
You guys are all basically saying $$ is more important than people not dying and that’s so gross, this world wasn’t designed for us to pay for anything or have to work our entire lives to have a roof over our heads, the system is broken and that’s why the economic impact is so exponential. Blame the lack of preparedness from the Trump admin, and this country’s inability to take care of its low/middle class population.

It doesn't seem to make sense to design an economy specifically for that But you’re saying that there will be more. And it doesn’t mean specifically for that but for disasters of similar magnitude. Natural disasters, severe recessions, pandemics, industry crashes, etc. These are all things that could benefit from a more flexible economy with things like universal healthcare and paid sick leave and rent/mortgage freezes during such times. These are things that would make the economies of the world better prepared to deal crisis situations at large, not just pandemics. However, since pandemics are predicted to be more common, it would behoove us to build structures in place to be more prepared for them.

It's true that they are expected to become more common but even if they happen twice a decade I don't know about changing an entire economic system just for pandemics Making frozen rents and mortgages and paid time off (especially extended like now) would require more of a communist system I think Any system even remotely business and profit based can't sustain just forgiving payments as some kind of born without consequences Some Countries are literally running like over a decade worth of deficits right now in a single year (my Country Canada is) to sustain and pay people staying at home to do nothing We might be able to get away with that kind of financial strain once, but if these pandemics do indeed become more common (even once a decade) it is not sustainable to manage things this way But the economic system doesn't allow it either This is complicated AF and I don't have the answers to what's realistic here For ppl to be able to skip their rents some landlords can't pay mortgage... To defer mortgage banks need capital from government cuz in the meantime they have costs (banks have money to survive a time but not months)... Either way the cost is there regardless of who we try to shift that cost to. Stuff may be "on hold" but it's not really on hold.

All true, but this is what I mean when I’m talking about a kind of radical shift in the way the economy works. Fact is that a highly capitalist system is not built to withstand the kind of ongoing crises that seem to be plaguing us more and more each year so a greater degree of hybridization will need to take place. I was just giving examples that have been proposed for this crisis when I referenced those. Basically, we need to get creative about how we can make a system that supports the working class since it drives the economy. It’s like a paper bag from the store. Our economy is a single bag with 10 pounds of groceries in it and we need to at least be double bagging it so it doesn’t bottom out and we lose all of our groceries. I agree and disagree with u at the same time I think a system like this would have to be more like communism and ran mostly by Government... Or at least a very significant part of society... I think if done well and pulled off it can be the best system but I also don't know how much faith I have that society would ever manage to pull it off We'd need: #1 very strong and competent Government leadership to not only take over transition of a new system but also run a new system in which it would play a much bigger role. Government would have to be competent, functional and know how to manage resources really well #2 ppl would need to stop the attitude of entitlement and me first thinking plaguing society today. People would need to be willing to make sacrafices and hard work for the greater good of the community even if they don't always necessarily get rewarded personally. A non profit system would require more selflessness than the majority of humans have now For this system to work well I think #1 and #2 I mentioned would be critical... And I don't particularly have much faith that either of them will ever happen much less both of them
