Given the shutdowns/lockdowns globally, and the uncertainty on how long isolation is required, this seems pretty reasonable unfortunately.

Nearly everyone I know is out of a job. So instead of just quarantining older people or people susceptible to getting sick and paying for them... let’s just put EVERYONE out of a job. So no, it’s not the virus that’s doing this. It’s the incompetent government.

You will all soon realize how much you take modern society for granted. Nobody will care about this virus after our entire economy collapses. This is a huge mistake.

I didn't even think of this. In the same way we can be ordered to stay home, we could also be ordered to return to work in order to fix the economy.
Ultimately saying: old people and those susceptible to covid, you're no longer the priority. The economy is.

It’s very disturbing. Don’t forget; the President said he knew it was a pandemic before the WHO called it one and it was being handled weeks ago. He’s doing such a great job and no one is acknowledging that though.

If he gets re-elected after this mess, there’s no hope for the US.

I honestly also feel like it would make more sense to try to come up with ways to quarantine the most vulnerable as much as possible rather than shutting Everything down the economic impacts are massive

Are we gonna result to shutdowns everytime there's a pandemic now? The world is more interconnected now than ever before. That means outbreaks very often WILL be global not local

"everytime there's a pandemic"? When was the last pandemic you lived through? There has not been one in most people's lifetimes. This is not a small disease outbreak. It is virtually unprecedented. The closest comparison is the 1918 flu pandemic. It is not like this happens every year. It's a once in a generation global catastrophe.

You cannot simply round up the sick and the elderly and force them into camps. You can ask people to stay in their homes to reduce spread. This is the strategy almost every nation has taken. If there were a better option that would spare the economy, it would have been used by now. The only thing we can do is advance testing and vaccine research to try and keep accurate info on who is sick so that spread is slowed.

Sorry, but closing stuff down is a good measure in times like these. It's not just about elderly dying, it's about keeping the total amount of people at intensive care units at a sustainable level. If someone has a car accident, there needs to be a bed for that person. If too many old people get infected at once, you get this.

Don't blame the containment policies (which are too little in the US, tbh), blame the lack of social security. The US government has been debt spending for years now to finance defence projects and tax cuts for the rich. If they had or implemented a sensible unemployment insurance for people with zero-hour contracts (and other flexible job arrangements, as well as insurance for forced full-time --> part-time switch), you wouldn't have this problem.

Maybe if Trump took this more seriously earlier we wouldn't be in this position :billie:

H1N1 in 2009 was a pandemic.

Just to answer the first question in this post.
