H1N1 in 2009 was a pandemic.

Just to answer the first question in this post.

It was nowhere near this magnitude. This comment doesn't help anything.  People need to realize this is not a common event. I worked in preschools in 2009. We never had such a threat in 2009.

A Great Depression 2.0 will trigger WW3.0 :trollga:

This ain’t looking good. We are entering a new Mad Max-type new world order anarchism dawning.

maybe, but probably not, since WWII was kinda just WWI continued after a pause  because all the main countries needed time to rebuild basically an entire generation of men who were killed. Although if the economy really does get that bad, I am concerned about the rise of [even more] authoritarianism.

"everytime there's a pandemic"? When was the last pandemic you lived through? There has not been one in most people's lifetimes. This is not a small disease outbreak. It is virtually unprecedented. The closest comparison is the 1918 flu pandemic. It is not like this happens every year. It's a once in a generation global catastrophe.

You cannot simply round up the sick and the elderly and force them into camps. You can ask people to stay in their homes to reduce spread. This is the strategy almost every nation has taken. If there were a better option that would spare the economy, it would have been used by now. The only thing we can do is advance testing and vaccine research to try and keep accurate info on who is sick so that spread is slowed.

It wouldn't be used by now if we were not prepared for it

And u make it sound like such a long time but it's not. Air travel has quadrupled in something like the last 20 years alone... And we were lucky the last outbreaks like Ebola, H1N1 and Sars did not have the level of infection Corona does and therefore was easier to contain

But My city Toronto did have to go into virtual lockdown over Sars as would the rest of the world had it spread more beyond its hot spots

We're very vulnerable to this kind of thing in the 21st century now. The amount of movement is unprecedented

I think we need some creative thinking and planning to deal with this stuff which will be more and more common going forward

What if this happens at least once every decade now? It takes the government's many many years to recover financial losses from huge downturns

It's not gonna be sustainable long term if whenever a pandemic shows up lockdowns is all we know how to do

Schwerk

I feel for US citizens, I can't imagine living in such uncertainty. I'm fortunate to live in the Netherlands where our government is trying to keep everyone financially stable by supporting businesses by postponing taxes, paying a big part of employees salary if they can't work for a while. Self-employed people are also supported. Doesn't mean there's no one suffering because if this. I also hope something good will come out of this and people that work in healthcare are respected more and better taken care off financially.

Nearly everyone I know is out of a job. So instead of just quarantining older people or people susceptible to getting sick and paying for them... let’s just put EVERYONE out of a job. So no, it’s not the virus that’s doing this. It’s the incompetent government.

You will all soon realize how much you take modern society for granted. Nobody will care about this virus after our entire economy collapses. This is a huge mistake.

Yes thank you. Quarantine should only be extended to the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions. 264 million Americans can get this virus and will only need 4 days of bedrest, and then carry out their lives.

Business that employ mainly those under 60 should not be shut down, nor should colleges and schools. Those above the age of 60 should remove themselves from society, not expect the entire global population to shut down over a virus that has a 2.2% death rate across ALL age groups

The older generation is again being selfish, just as they are with climate change, and they are putting the entire future at risk for the sake of themselves.

This is actually an interesting point of view. It does sound valid.

But that is the point. COVID-19 is not comparable to those others because its rate of infection o is so high and so many people are asymptomatic carriers. We have not seen anything spread at this rate with such severe implications in our lifetimes. I don't think we will see global shutdown every 10 years. Scientists have predicted local shutdowns will likely continue for at least 18 months after the peak of the virus. Meaning a city that has positive cases will shutdown to protect from spread. A virus is not something you can contain. Hopefully we will eventually have a vaccine to help limit the transmission. But until then what else can be done?

The death rate is currently at 4.3% from 204k cases as of 9am US time.

Also, the only reason why we are closing up shop on everything is due to the unpreparedness of the Trump admin. If they would've gotten to work months ago to prep for this, we probably wouldn't be in the pickle we are in now. Just look at Japan and South Korea. But because of what we are seeing in Iran, Italy and now France, Spain, UK, we have no choice but to act. If you come late to the test with no studying or idea of what to expect, you rush the test and fail. And that's exactly what is happening right now for Western countries.

The way some of you think is really scary... You call selfish a part of the population that is the most sensitive to the virus? Does a 5% of the population dying sounds good to you? You don't have parents, grandparents? Let countries face crisis if that means saving people!

Jesus Christ. I always thought it’d take a miracle over good ideas and inspiration for Joe Biden to win against Trump. Here it is. Luck and tricks brought him the presidency, after racism made Obama uplift his disgraced image, for a running mate to calm down the white moderates.

His entire political career is such scum :billie:

That death rate is statistically biased, as many experts have pointed out. The average death rate amongst countries with over 1000 cases is 2.2%, which gives you a better idea of the real death rate as opposed to the nominal one. (i.e. if you have 20 cases in a country, and theyre all seniors, and 18 die, obviously your death rate will be overinflated).

I absolutely agree with you on the second part, the Trump admin (and governments around the word) should not be shutting down business and shops, but rather requiring anyone over the age of 60/with pre-existing conditions to remain in isolation.

when will you understand that anyone can get sick? even young people like you and me may have to go to intensive care. This is not a normal flu or something that affect only old people
