Baldness plant gene discovery reveals origin of hairy alpine plants

Scientists have solved a puzzle that has long baffled botanists -- why some plants on high mountainsides are hairy while their low-lying cousins are bald.

Small hairs may act like UV sunscreen to protect alpine plants growing in full sun on lofty, exposed cliffs, the team says. Low-lying plants might not need to make the hairs because of the relative abundance of shade in valleys. 

 Researchers from the University of Edinburgh identified the gene that controls hair production—which they named the Hairy gene—in snapdragons by breeding alpine and lowland species with each other. 

They found that the gene is switched off in alpine plants. It is switched on in low-lying species, which causes baldness by blocking the activation of sections of DNA involved in hair production, the team says.

 The researchers have identified genes that control hair production, which they call hair genes in snipers, by breeding alpine and lowland species. The results show that the first roundworms that grew about 12 million years ago were bald and newer alpine species developed as a result of mutations that deactivate genes.

Basically the small hairs are necessary for the alpine plants to protect themselves from harsh UV radiation from big altitudines. However,  low-lying plants even though are found in mountainside don't have these hairs bececause they don't need it since they are low-lying and don't get affected.

The discovery is that low-lying plants need to switch off the gene present in most other plants, which means they still do have it present in their genome.
