We need to lay off most employees temporarily or just get them to work from home (for the ones that can). There will only be about 4 of us operating the whole facility, with the intention of keeping things safest. Does this sound like a decent contingency? I'm having a hard time deciding on what's right to do. The laid-off staff have vacation hours to use, and EI is available to them. People aren't heeding instructions to stay home, so this had to be done. It may be annoying, it may have devastating economic consequences for certain businesses, but it will save lives. In situations like this I wish North America wasn't so Decentralized In Canada and the US Provinces and States have a lot of their own decision making which can make it tougher to synchronize efforts nationally In China and many EU Nations the Federal Governments make decisions fast. Other public locations are open with discretion such as the gym, and essential retail such as pharmacies and grocery stores are open. Social gatherings limited to no more than 10 people. If you break the law by putting other in danger, or lie about where you traveled, they will make you pay 130,000 dollars!! Iran decided not to stamp on Passports so now alot of Saudi's are lying about coming from Iran. The government is offering free testing, paying people who cant work, and giving out free sanitizer. There have been thousands of border crossings from US to Ontario. And who knows what's been brought over. It's all very scary and unfortunate. Our staff are not losing their jobs; essentially they just need to stay away as a general health and safety precaution, and also because business activity is tanking. I hope things get stable soon.
