Social distancing is the most effective and concrete thing that can be done to make a difference. It’s starting to happen. Washington just shut down all schools across the state until late April and as far as I know all of the cases are around the Seattle area. I’m on the other side of the state and we have zero here but schools are still closing reality’s tight if the music is right

I'm not saying it's all bad, but I've seen valid arguments for both sides. My point was that the UK is obviously more developed and yet they don't seem to take logical actions. My apologies for offending anyone.

It seems scary but it’s nothing to be afraid of. Not the first pandemic in world history, not even the first one in the last 20 years. Just do what you’re told and be hygienic and that’s it. Ok thank you very much

If you manage to stop the spread, the area gets completely clear of the virus in about 30-40 days.

Although I don't like that it happened because it is disruptive, my school just closed for two weeks even though no one in it has the Corona Virus to be safe. I would rather be safe than sorry. I'll attempt to explain the reasoning behind the UK's position; regardless of your opinions on Boris Johnson, the UK's response has been led almost entirely by the Chief Medical Officer and the scientific advisors, and is backed by a great deal of statistical modelling and behavioural science. Essentially, the experts advising the government think that most countries seem to be preparing for a coronavirus hurricane, and the UK is expecting it to be a coronavirus winter. Very basic explanation: the UK doesn't think it is possible for the virus to be completely eradicated, but believes its spread in the UK will peak in 5-6 weeks; models suggest that the more draconian measures other countries have enacted are not sustainable for such a long time, and that, if enacted now in the UK, when the restrictions are lifted you'll see another wave of the virus; the economic damage will also be unnecessarily severe. Why not close schools, ban gatherings, stop flights, etc., followed by loooong explanation: Spoiler Why not close schools: cases of covid 19 among children and young people are very mild; closing schools would likely lead to them being looked after by grandparents, who are at much greater risk if they do contract the virus from the kids. They also modelled that, in order for school closures to be effective, they need to last for 13 weeks (not realistic or desirable), and the children will likely meet and play with each other in other environments. Why not ban large gatherings (sports matches etc.): according to current models, banning such gatherings now will only decrease the peak number of cases by 5%; transmissions are more likely among close gatherings of families and friends, especially in indoor environments like pubs, than in such gatherings. Why not stop flights from Italy/China/etc.: according to models, even if 95% of such flights are stopped, there is at best a marginal decrease of the peak number of infected individuals, and delays the spread of the virus by at most 4 days. A more realistic percentage of cancelled flights (50%--accounting for transit flights and other innovative travel routes) has practically no effect whatsoever. The UK's strategy at the moment is to "flatten the peak": delay when the peak of the virus will happen (warm weather seems to help slow the spread, vaccines/treatments can be developed, hospitals can be prepared, etc.), and make sure that the peak of the infections is less high so as not to overwhelm the health service. Social distancing and other more extreme measures taken by other countries will eventually be taken, but the models have shown that doing these too early and too suddenly will have adverse effects (more panic buying, overwhelmed hospitals etc.). By phasing in these measures, the population has time to normalise behaviour that is conducive to halting the spread of the virus, and some degree of herd immunity (when enough people recover from mild cases of the disease) can develop. In short, I don't think the UK's response has been perfect (I'd like the government to release the models on which their strategy is based), but it appears to be backed by a lot of studies. It's also the only one that has taken a great deal of behavioural science into account, which might be risky, but we won't know its efficacy until several months from now...
