StrawberryBlond 14,254
Remember when some reporters speculated that Gaga's box office scores weren't being updated every month as usual because she had majorly flopped and her label was trying to cover up her failure? Now, of course, Billboard and all the other souces who provide scores don't have bias towards anyone - they just print what scores they recieve with no cover-ups, no matter how bad the artist performed. Well, I'm really wondering if this is a rare instance of a cover-up case for Madonna's tour because box office scores for her final four dates haven't materialized yet. She did those shows practically a month ago and for some reason, when she got her final gross update, the final box office score stopped at Porto Alegre, even though Argentina and Chile should have been counted at the same time. It's weird, because we already know the final box office score from Pollstar - $296.1 million. Up to and including the final box office score, the gross is $284 million, with four more stadium dates still to be counted. That means that she only made $11.1 million from four stadiums, or $2.7 million per show, which is very embarassing, considering how much she's pulled from the other dates. Looks like Gaga wasn't the only one affected with poor sales in the region.

There were pictures of her shows in Argentina and Chile and those stadiums look JAM PACKED. Maybe they had lower ticket prices, and I think the last Argentina show may have been added later. Either way she probably has nothing to cover up and like you stated earlier in your post Billboard has no interest in covering anybody's failures. Either way she probably has nothing to cover up and like you stated earlier in your post Billboard has no interest in covering anybody's failures. I know that Argentina had 50% price reductions to get more people in the last few days before, as she did in other parts of Latin America. Not sure about Chile. Yes, the third Argentinian date was added later, so it was understandable that it didn't sell out. I'm just confused as to why these scores were not printed at the same time. I can't think of one viable reason why they would be delayed other than some sort of cover up. Gaga's Puerto Rican score got announced before the Mexican score even though the Mexican show was first, but I think sites just wanted to cover all her stadium dates at once or something. If there's no updates for Madonna next month, this plot is really going to thicken. I really want to know what her overall attendence was so I can calculate if Gaga has the possibility of beating it. For a living legend whose tour consisted of 45% stadiums to get barely over 2 million spectators is shocking when you consider that a popstar who's just five years in the game is only 500,000 spectators behind and still has a North American arena leg to go. Madonna may have grossed more in the end, but Gaga could have the last laugh when it comes to attendence figures even though she had smaller venues. You are one of the few people in this entire website that is able to compare Gaga and Madge in an unbiased way, i have seen that by reading your always elaborate comments on it, and I truly appreciate it and am glad someone like you runs this thread. If I can be useful to you, I live in Chile and the media stated that M sold 40-45k tickets, with a 2x1 promotion for one week, and mobile phone company sponsoring , giving tickets through twitter. If its correct, its low for her considering she started selling 4 months before gags (who sold 42400 with two weeks of 2x1). But I also have to say that we have seen how atomic bomb fights start every time someone mentions Madge, so its better to keep it low brow here. I hope we can see pictures of Vancouver show soon! The shows are probably sold out, they have been adding tickets like crazy the last weeks. Hello, it's me

Thanks so much - I try not to be biased even though I'm not Madonna's biggest fan (what an understatement that is!) Yes, Madonna used even more promotional tactics to sell tickets than Gaga did, even resorting to giving her album away for free when you bought a ticket (the free copies were counted as sales figures, so even though her album debuted at #1 in the US with 359,000 copies, apparently as many as 185,000 of those were free). Lots of her stadium dates were less than 50% full and yet, everyone just talks about how much of a flop Gaga was for playing to a 40,000 crowd instead of 50,000. It's weird that Gaga gets so much flack when, as such a new artist, she should be allowed to have lousy ticket sales and selling as well as she has should be seen as an achievement. It shows how much of a star the public really thinks she is if they have such high expectations of her. I don't see the public picking on Britney, Rihanna or Katy for never selling out a stadium in their career (or hardly ever playing at stadiums, for that matter). Not sticking up for Madonna, but like I said earlier she really does not have anything to hide. If the last few dates of her tour were THAT big of a disaster to warrant a "cover up" then the media would have reported on it like they did with Gaga and Peru and other dates in Latin America. It is impressive that Gaga's attendance will rival Madonna, but she will have played almost twice the amount of dates as well, so it almost evens out the fact that Madonna played to mostly stadiums in Europe (in North America she played all arenas except Yankee Stadium and Plains of Abraham). It's not really fair to compare the two tours at all though because as you stated in your post they are in two completely different stages and it doesn't help Gaga's case at all. The BTWB has done extremely well and she is setting herself up to become a major touring force in the music industry!

I can be useful too.. i live in Brazil and Madonna's tickets for São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro were with 50% discount.. Madonna's average per show in são paulo was 4.200.000.. the same as Gaga... Madonna has sold 196.000 tickets in São Paulo last tour without discounts.. in this tour she has sold 84.000 tickets in São Paulo with discounts
