Do we have some type of timeline of when the process for TFM started? Sometimes it’s hard to picture Gaga from a previous era creating the next album because the Image can be so different. Was there any interviews of her mentioning “the next” album? Also, question for people who were fans during the time of The Fame. What did you guys all think the next album was going to sound like? Did the fan base think it’d be similar to the fame or did y’all know she was going into a new direction?

Let me tell you i was not ready for the fame monster, when DITD leaked that song blew my 16 year old mind. The Alejandro leak was amazing too. Me and my mum were bopping to it in the car, good times :ohwell:  when the official version came out, the beat drop in alejandro sent my wig into orbit

If we look at the ideas that she had started developing for her NKOTB opening act, then we can tell that she started thinking about it around ~September/October of 2008. One interlude for the NKOTB opening actually had lyrics from Monster in it, though that song was not necessarily ready until sometime in early 2009. Originally, The Fame Monster was to have been only a re-release of The Fame with 3/4 new tracks on it (Similar to how Circus was originally going to be a re-release of Blackout with four new songs.) However, by around May of 2009 this changed to plans for an EP that could also stand as its own album. Interestingly enough, after this is when most of the songs that made it on to The Fame Monster were recorded.

Regarding the timeline in terms of recording, it can be a bit confusing. It is pretty clear that several songs originally intended for the Pussycat Dolls were reconsidered for The Fame Monster (Out of Control, Animal, etc.) However, when Lady Gaga actually did these songs is not entirely clear. While most point to 2008, Lady Gaga was discussing her work on the Doll Domination project earlier in the year in 2009; keep in mind that Doll Domination had two re-releases. I am not saying that she did not do writing in 2008, but it is hard to argue that nothing was done for the Pussycat Dolls in early 2009 either.

Essentially, The Fame Monsters early development began in 2008 during the fall. However, by mid/late-spring of 2009 The Fame Monster's plans were changed in a way that would allow it to evolve into what would end up being released.
