Jake 0
Katy is my number 2. Hoping she scores a Grammy tomorrow. She works hard and does well. She deserves it.
Mariano 958
Beyonce with her poor singles is 10 times bigger Icon than Katy Perry not only because she is in the industry for 10 years + but because of her artistry this is something that Katy Perry will never have.. Lady Gaga is the biggest Icon at the moment.. neither Riri/Katy/Kesha and even Beyonce and Britney can get close to her..
ryhanna 3,507
Katy's music is designed to chart well. Almost every song on TD could have charted well as a single. It's simple music that is made with the intention of being appealing. The downside to this is that while her music will chart very well, she isn't taken seriously. Her music is a reflection of her. Simple, basic and appealing. There's nothing challenging to take seriously. What I like about Katy is that she knows people see her as a fun pop girl, and she doesn't pretend that she's more than that.
Arturo 40,746
Kesha had hits with Dr. Luke too, but Katy is is one the public cares about (judging by twitter followers, album and tour sales). She has above average videos too. Yes Madonna is more comparable to Gaga in cultural impact, but in terms of song quality and live performance quality, early Madonna (Virgin era) had nothing on Katy. I disagree. I love Like a Virgin and think it's better than both of Katy's albums. But that's entirely subjective :haha: Oh and the Virgin tour is great. Haven't seen any of Katy's tours so I wouldn't compare them.
mariomania1234 11,368
How involved was Madonna with her first two albums compared to Katy with her first two albums? I don't trust writing credits because people have been known to lie.
kupo 201
I would never deny Katy her relevance--she's one of the biggest in the Pop game right now outside of Gaga (if we consider Adele somewhat adjacent to Pop). But it's also true that she *is* seen as the Pop star who's quite happy just having fun, easy hits. Nothing about her is challenging or all that terribly interesting (the way Nekci Menij parodies her is actually a pretty good barometer of the way she's culturally viewed). And the thing is, I've always liked Katy as a person. She seems very pleasant. My problem stems from the fact that I honestly think she just doesn't make good music. Dr. Luke has practically turned her work into one-note, and it's a pretty dull note at that (as is most of Luke's production). And her song writing is dull, too. Not to mention that releasing Ur so Gay and I Kissed a Girl on the same album is just...problematic. I don't think she meant any harm by it at all, but it still leaves a sour taste. I just don't think, to this point, she's done anything all that good. She's had a few catchy songs, but again, as I've always said, if you're in the mainstream pop game, if you're not creating catchy music, you're doing something wrong. An earworm does not a good song make. Yes, she's insanely popular. But so is Michael Bay. Michael Bay makes bad movies, and to this point, Katy Perry has made not great music. I wish her the best, and I'll gladly embrace her if she starts to churn out interesting work--cuz, like I said, I think she seems lovely--but to this point I've just not been impressed. craig 680
How involved was Madonna with her first two albums compared to Katy with her first two albums? I don't trust writing credits because people have been known to lie. Madonna did not write Like a Virgin or Material Girl, the two smashes that really defined her. She did make brilliant videos for them. Yes Madonna had good singles that era, but Katy had 3 good ones from her debut too.

Pure Adrenaline 1,518
da fuc....people wanting gaga to take notes from Kett Perr are you seriously realizing what you suggest Gaga should do ..... I mean I have nothing against Katy but guuurl can you imagine what would be like if Gaga was even JUST a little bit like Katy ..... She's on a winning streak and the most consistent hit-maker in pop - even Rihanna can't compete with Katy's hit ratio. Third albums are typically the transition albums (True Blue, Born This Way, Britney, Good Girl Gone Bad) so it'll be interesting to see what happens with this one. it was 2nd studio album thought It's much more fun to have hizophrenia... u never get lonely
Tommymonster44 0
I've said this once and I'll say it again. Katy's career path is VERY similar to Madonna's. As stupid as that may sound, Madonna was the biggest pop star of her era in the 80's with her 2nd and third albums the same way Katy is arguably the biggest pop girl (with singles, radio presence, performances @ many award shows) during the TD era and part of the OOTB era. Like Madonna, Katy lacked respect from the GP, awards (Madonna had like 1 Grammy before she won 4 after ROL), and exceptional performance skills (Madonna was not that good in the 80's when it came to performing, she improved later) and both have rather weak voices. But the hits, the album sales, and the dominance was there. I have no doubt in my mind that if Katy can manage to branch out and gain some critical acclaim and experiment more, she can seriously have an amazing career under her belt. Her last tour did well, regardless of it's underwhelming gross, most of the shows still sold out so far from a flop or anything of that nature. Madonna established herself as an unbeatable singles Queen before she decided to experiment, and I believe Katy is doing the same. Sometimes I wish Gaga did the same. One of the best posts ever. In short, Katy Perry = modern day Madonna Lady Gaga = modern day David Bowie As superficial as this might sound, Katy's look has helped to her success. A lot of my friends would listen to a KP song just because she's pretty. She's just this harmless girl with catchy pop songs and sweet videos, and that's why she's so appealing to the American pop culture. In my opinion Katy is a really good pop star, but her career is just too safe. Her riskiest move was probably I Kissed A Girl, which somehow sparked controversy by the time it was released. Otherwise, her career has been safe and predictable. If she wants to be remembered in 10 years, she has to go risky and get out of her comfort zone. Good looks are basically a requirement for fame, unfortunately. We have a very superficial society and it's not limited to Katy. Most female pop stars and the majority of male ones are attractive. How involved was Madonna with her first two albums compared to Katy with her first two albums? I don't trust writing credits because people have been known to lie. Her 80's albums were completely produced and mostly written by the Dr. Luke's of the era. Yes, she was a control freak that had a tight grip on production..but she didn't actually do it herself. The same thing can be said about Katy. She doesn't create a lot of her stuff, but she always overlooks projects and is very particular about the outcome. Tommymonster44 0
Not to mention that releasing Ur so Gay and I Kissed a Girl on the same album is just...problematic. See, I've always interpreted Ur so Gay differently than most other people. To me, the song was satire. She spends the entire time listing off reasons why the guy was gay, but no where did she mention him liking boys. He was gay because he "doesn't east meat, drives electrical cars, so indie rock it's almost an art, need SPF 45 just to stay alive" I always viewed the song as sarcastic. She was criticizing pop culture for associating these superficial characteristics with gay people. It was a statement that you can't look gay. You're gay because you like guys.
