Arturo 40,746
I've said this once and I'll say it again. Katy's career path is VERY similar to Madonna's. As stupid as that may sound, Madonna was the biggest pop star of her era in the 80's with her 2nd and third albums the same way Katy is arguably the biggest pop girl (with singles, radio presence, performances @ many award shows) during the TD era and part of the OOTB era. Like Madonna, Katy lacked respect from the GP, awards (Madonna had like 1 Grammy before she won 4 after ROL), and exceptional performance skills (Madonna was not that good in the 80's when it came to performing, she improved later) and both have rather weak voices. But the hits, the album sales, and the dominance was there. I have no doubt in my mind that if Katy can manage to branch out and gain some critical acclaim and experiment more, she can seriously have an amazing career under her belt. Her last tour did well, regardless of it's underwhelming gross, most of the shows still sold out so far from a flop or anything of that nature. Madonna established herself as an unbeatable singles Queen before she decided to experiment, and I believe Katy is doing the same. Sometimes I wish Gaga did the same. Katy's impact isn't even comparable to Madonna's.

Wow...That's actually an excellent point. I don't think Katy will ever be as "big" as Gaga as in fan base, ticket sales, album sales, and merchandise, but that comparison is thought provoking. If she had came out before people could cherry pick music and download illegally there's no telling how high her albums sales would be. With those 5 smashes from Teenage Dream I'm sure her sales would have been massive. While the young audience doesn't buy albums now they did in the 80s. She's on a winning streak and the most consistent hit-maker in pop - even Rihanna can't compete with Katy's hit ratio. Third albums are typically the transition albums (True Blue, Born This Way, Britney, Good Girl Gone Bad) so it'll be interesting to see what happens with this one. You might also compare Katy to Kylie Minogue who started her career with 13 straight UK top 10 hits with the help of Stock Aiken Waterman producers (the Dr. Lukes of that era). Enough success to make Madonna fans in UK feel pressed, and while they condescended to Kylie the way Monsters do with Katy, Kylie stuck around and keep improving her game (peaking since 2000 while Madonna has slacked off). That's exactly what I had in mind for months. I am really excited if her new album will prove this thought
Ozzy8923 9
Katy's impact isn't even comparable to Madonna's. Neither was Madonna's in the 1980's when she was being compared to Barbra Streisand and Cher, who were arguably the 2 biggest females in music before Madonna came out. Ozzy8923 9
I give credit where it's due. I can't think of any other pop star who can be overexposed so much as Katy and have all her songs still do that well. WA is about to go Triple Platinum for God's sake. I don't know how she does it. One damn promo performance and the song skyrockets on iTunes. After, TOTGA and POM, I thought it was done because those 2 singles under performed (for what was expected) but then WA comes along and just kept on slaying. I can only imagine how her lead single will do. :rip:

Ozzy8923 9
I know that. But Madonna impact when she was just starting > Katy's impact http://i49.tinypic.com/2us97w5.gif Make cheesy relatable-Dr.Luke produced music that 11 year old girls will buy. Right. That's how. But, really, Britney and Ke$ha worked with Luke and none of them matched even a fraction of the success of TD WW and in the US. It's more than just Dr. Luke (and let's not forget the StarGate produced Firework, the biggest hit from the album). And WA was a pretty serious song. Not about s-x or falling in love. A song about realization and opening your eyes and seeing the world around you as it is and not as a fantasy. Serious but RELATABLE. Gaga could take a note or two. craig 680
Make cheesy relatable-Dr.Luke produced music that 11 year old girls will buy. Kesha had hits with Dr. Luke too, but Katy is is one the public cares about (judging by twitter followers, album and tour sales). She has above average videos too. Yes Madonna is more comparable to Gaga in cultural impact, but in terms of song quality and live performance quality, early Madonna (Virgin era) had nothing on Katy. Deacon 5
Katy tapped into the kid's market perfectly while still being s-xy enough for a somewhat more mature demographic. That was a good move on her/her team's part. It hasn't helped her in terms of being taken seriously as an artist, though, but I suppose there is always time to change that. heavymlover 340
As superficial as this might sound, Katy's look has helped to her success. A lot of my friends would listen to a KP song just because she's pretty. She's just this harmless girl with catchy pop songs and sweet videos, and that's why she's so appealing to the American pop culture. In my opinion Katy is a really good pop star, but her career is just too safe. Her riskiest move was probably I Kissed A Girl, which somehow sparked controversy by the time it was released. Otherwise, her career has been safe and predictable. If she wants to be remembered in 10 years, she has to go risky and get out of her comfort zone.
