The anti-consumerism :legend:

The whole making fun of all the hipsters that think it's cool to buy all their stuff from thrift shops. The lyrics are meant to be funny. It's satire.

It's better than the entire iTunes Top 10 right now.

Especially when I Knew You Were Selling Out This Time is there.

See, I actually take it as the exact opposite. It's definitely meant to be ridiculous and funny, but, especially given Macklemore's rather socially conscious bent on the The Heist, I think there's a level of sincerity in Thrift Shop. It's not about making fun of hipsters who buy their clothes at thrift shops, it's about subverting hip-hop's obsession with material things as proof of legitimation (think of all the hip hop songs obsessed with talking about how fat their wallet is, or how big their bank is, Nicki bragging about getting paid 50K for a verse, etc.) Hip hop more than any other genre, has an obsession with things, and with talking about those things to prove how how awesome you are. And Thrift Shop, while sounding like a clever/funny novelty song, actually becomes an attack on this mentality.

Spin has an interesting article calling it the worst song in America because it "reeks of privilege" because Macklemore isn't shopping at thrift stores because he needs to, but because he thinks it's fashionable and it can get him noticed at clubs. I think this is a very lazy reading. I mean--Macklemore IS privileged, and he does sing from that point of view, but the song makes no attempts to hide that. He's not trying to pose as somebody who's struggling to survive. It isn't so much a song that rails against conspicuous consumption (as Spin thinks he's trying to do) as it is a song that sort of redefines what can be conspicuously consumed, and therefore who can take part in that (i.e. a helluva lot more people). It's more a song that challenges and parodies invidious consumption.

It's clever, it's funny, it's got great production. It's the whole package, and I firmly believe it's the best #1 we've had in a couple years.

wow If Scream and Shout is Britney's biggest WW hit since early 2000s I don't know how she is still in the industry... and this is not even her song ... In my opinion this song is cool but compared to Radar, If u seek Amy and Criminal ( 3 of her singles that are not really succesful) this song is a poop :s

Really? Isnt that bad? I thought she was bigger.

iLRBXWNbsovco.jpg

She is not a threat to others popstars since 2004. The only thing that was keeping her in the game, was her name

Runway

I don't agree that IKYWT is a sell-out, nor do I have a stance on it, but Gaga can't sell-out anymore because she was a generic popstar from the start.

how did she sell out when dance pop was NOWHERE to be found on the radio in 2008 :deadbanana: which is why they REFUSED to play Just Dance for a long ass time

Arturo

To call IKYWT "selling out" implies one of two silly premises:

(1) That country music is better, more authentic, less commercial, etc, than dance-pop.

Or (2) That artists should never dabble in other genres to attract new fans, in which case the rock influenced songs on BTW (EoG & Y&I) were sell outs, as Gaga pandered to middle America.

Forget the genre. How about the basic commercial production by Max Martin?

But you hate Gangnam Style with a passion  I would honestly bucket those two songs in a similar category. Both are funny, carefree, novelty type songs, but just different genres. Similar to Call Me Maybe and Sexy and I Know It.

The dance annoyed the **** out of me. PSY just rubbed me the wrong way. Macklemore on the other hand does ;)
