craig 680
I like Gaga because I love pop music and I love all the performances, visuals, and ideas behind her music. However, I don't deny that she isn't a mainstream dance artist that makes generic music to become popular. Correction: she changed what was considered "mainstream music" in the US as she become popular. Same way Nirvana became mainstream, and have countless generic imitators, but started rebelling against the sort of rock and metal that was mainstream in the late 80's. Real pioneers change what is maintream, or create the new standard that get's imitated. How many hits in the mid-00's sounded like Just Dance and Poker Face? BTW JUST SEEMS MORE INDIE BECAUSE IT FAILED TO SET TRENDS THE WAY WE ALL HOPED IT WOULD (oops caps lock stuck).
Jake 0
Lady Gaga herself even implied she is the industry machine. I don't think she sees it as negative. I'm sure she didn't mean it exactly the way you're speaking. She's very self aware and knows that she's making pop music but it's obvious that Gaga sees herself as a cut above the industry. She even admitted it in that Vouge interview. She knows how people view her and what she's doing, but I'm sure she considers herself a true artist rather than a normal pop star and rightly so. Magoo 6
Radio isn't as essential as it once was. It doesn't have to pick up a song to make or keep it a mega-hit. Indeed the continuing sales success of Gangnam style despite being almost completely purged of radio play suggests that (i) radio play is no longer that relevant, (ii) The BB Hot 100 insofar as it is such a high proportion based on radio play ceases to be relevant. In the future all that people will look at it the total sales, how many times platinum a song is - I think that is already starting to happen anyway. By people you mean pop stans and chart freaks like us right? Cause the general public doesn't give 2 ****s if a song is Double Platinum or Double Wood. Cause the general public doesn't give 2 ****s if a song is Double Platinum or Double Wood. I've noticed that UK peeps are more aware of singles going #1, because it's based on sales. For a long time "singles success" in US was mostly about radio airplay. Everyone knows Thriller was a record setting album, but it was only via Katy Perry that I heard Bad produced 5 #1 singles. And I was a teen in the 80's.

Cause the general public doesn't give 2 ****s if a song is Double Platinum or Double Wood. The general public doesnt give 2 ****s neither about charts or sales. They just go with the flow of what is the most popular at the moment. In pop stans terms, sales are a lot more important than chart positions. Telephone, Bad Romance and Paparazzi are huge in sales WW, but none of them went #1 in the US. Pop stans know that.

CANNOGABANG 4
There's a flaw with that logic haha. Steve Jobs actually created NEW technology. It's not like Iphones were never popular before him. He CREATED that. Lady Gaga didn't create dance music. She must brought it back. MAJOR DIFFERENCE The technology was long before Steve Jobs. He just made it popular again, and in a convenient and attractive way.
